Post subject:  harmonic balancer/ damper
i am in the process of converting ruster to a mandrel drive setup for the oil / vacuum pump.

the mandrel kit that I bought does not bolt up to the accessory drive pulley holes On a stock type slant 6 damper.

I currently run a romac damper which has the provisions for the front and rear accessory pulleys to bolt to... just like from the factory.


here's my question...

1... is the bolt pattern on a slant balancer the same as a Chevy or ford?

2.... is the slant balancer neutral balance or not? the mandrel kit I bought was to fit a sb/bb Chrysler, and I figured it might bolt up to the slant dampner... but it won't. so if the factory style pattern on the romac is not the same as a Chevy or ford then I will need to see if I can put a BB Chrysler dampner on the slant .

One pattern on the stock damper is supposed to match Chevy. All are neutral balance. Small block dampers also fit. When I was building the Bonneville 170 I used a NASCAR small block Super Damper and shortened the hub.

that thought had crossed my mind... it seems that by modifying the romac to fit the mandrel drive kit the holes will be too close to the ones that re already there. I don't want to take a chance with the mandrel drive being mounted in an un secure way.

the kit I bought will fit sb/bb Chrysler (dampner)without much fuss.


Can anyone confirm for sure that the pattern on the romac is the same as a Chevy????
if so I can exchange this kit for a Chevy one.... it will then install without much fuss too.

Greg, My O'l Dart has a Big Block damper on it. Maybe take a look if it will help.

I took a lucky guess and ordered a mandrel kit for a sbc..

it was very close so I drilled 3 holes out to 27/64ths and it's on..

the bb Chrysler damper option meant I would have had to spend another $200+ dollars which I dont have at this point :-(

the bb Chrysler mandrel is going back to summit tomorrow.

This might be a stupid question, but when is performance balancer (romac) needed? I have balanced crank, h-profiles and wisecos.

when you don't want an old oe style one to fly apart and break stuff at high RPms

Greg are the the stock slant ones known for flying apart? When I was being schooled on what to buy from Mike Jefferies, he said that it was not necessary. I had everything balanced and it has seen lots of 58-6000 rpm shifts...I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope it doesn't become a issue. I suppose you will be shifting higher andy our engine is full race.
Any other opinions on using these on a 6000 rpm motor?
Do they explode or fly apart without warning? or will there be a sign? maybe a vibration?

Hi Derek, I totally Trust What Mike says..
In this instance I like to have cheap insurance. I Have seen things go wrong when I least expect them too.
Pressure Plate and clutch explosions.. etc.

To me Its; worth the $250 or so for an SFI Approved romac unit.

The stock ones are cast and I just don't trust em.. With newer parts and or a Damper rebuild I suppose they would be okay. But again that's just my opinion. Yes it in good to balance all parts. I know next to nothing compared to Mike.. I just like to idiot -proof my junk cause I am prone to idiot type problems. :-)

The problem with stock dampers is not so much exploding as the outer ring coming off the hub or maybe just slipping and making it look like your timing is off. I had a Damper Dudes rebuilt come apart on me 600 miles away from home on a street strip car that never saw 6000 RPM. I use a Romac now, they are made so they can't come apart. Cheap insurance.

I ordered and received Romac balancer. Noticed that it is smaller than stock, so it will slow down accessories. Which probably is a good thing at high rpm.

My cars with romac do not have Power steering... sorry I will be of no Help on that one :-(
