Post subject:  Drive shaft length?

I need a drive shaft for a 111" wheelbase car, 904, and 8 1/4" rear. I need to know how long a shaft fits this combo. Normally I would just have one custom made, but I only need this to work long enough to make sure the 904 works correctly, and then I will cut it down when the GV OD is added.

So when I go searching for a shaft either in a yard or a fellow member's stash, it would be nice to have a measurement to go for. If some fellow forum member has the same combo, maybe they could measure overall length over u joint end caps. I know this is not easy to do, so much thanks in advance.

grab a tape and measure...between trans and rear yoke
....if no yoke in trans .your measure would be up to where yoke slide to seal on new shaft

There used to be a page at Auto Hobby Digest with a list of the driveshafts by length and their application. The Internet Time Machine coughed up a copy for me years ago and I have it saved, but at home and I'm currently at work. If you're a Moparts member it appears someone may have attached the list to a post, but I can't quite tell because of the web filtering they do here.

I checked from my phone and could see part of the chart even without logging in to the forum.

Just crawled under my '71 Dart, which has a 111" wheelbase. (904/slant). Awhile back, I swapped discs onto the front and an 8-1/4" rear onto the back to upgrade the 7-1/4" that came on it. When I did that, I had the original driveshaft cut down and re-balanced.

Ballbark length (U-joint centerline-to-U-joint centerline) is about 52". That isn't 100% accurate down to the fraction of an inch, because I didn't have anybody just now to hold the far end of the tape in place. So I marked the shaft mid-way, measured from each centerline to the mark and then added the two measurements together. So I think that's pretty close.

Hope that helps.

Sam,

Ryan has a driveline out of his Dart right not. He should be able to get you a measurement. His is a 8 3/4 so you would need to subtract for that distance. Just give him a call.

Rick, Ryan and I have been in communication. There is a good chance he has a drive shaft for me if I can get a measurement. It sounds like Red has answered the question for now. I will PM him with the information.

Thanks Red! Much appreciated!
