Will I need to pull the truck backwards slightly to unjam it?

Ideas appreciated.

Looking for comealong...

Four speed in the 75 D100... whatever that is...

I've been replacing the brake lines slowly and
just forgot to take it out of gear before trying to
start it - now it won't 'pop' out of first.

Got it!

Comealong (I used a ratcheting tow strap/tie down)

One end to bumper, around tree, other end to
bumper (this gets you a bit more leverage)

Block clutch pedal to floor with rod (jack handle)
and seat.

Slowly apply pressure until you feel truck edge backwards.
(mine was on gravel and started to budge/slide a bit)

Back in cab, jostle shift lever.

Pops loose, if not, apply a bit more pressure, repeat jostling.

Obvious perhaps but I'm still relieved!

Yeah getting the tranny to roll a bit can relieve the tension on the clutch and gears...in a pinch you could take the driveline off the rear axle and turn it one way or the other to dislodge it...or just jack the rear up and roll a tire by hand back and forth to loosen it up.

See this a bit on cars with worn clutch and sometimes the return spring is a little weak...you probably have the NP435 and the HD clutch.

I guess you can see the tag on the tranny to confirm
which model it is - any way to tell if it's got the HD clutch?

Only 2 types of 4 speeds available in your era truck...the shifter out the top is an NP435...if shifter is bolted to the tailshaft of the tranny then it's an A-833OD....standard 10" clutch if starter is on top near the exhaust manifold when mounted to the bellhousing...is 11" clutch if mounted low to the ground on the bellhousing.

I slowly started to pull it - which means, turns out, it (the tranny)
is a New Process 4500 (I read 4580 or 4530 from below - could
do a rubbing I guess to get a better idea) .

Screwed up the cup to get the shifter handle off - darn it - really
should have gotten the picture - the tangs got bent when I could
have just pushed down on the CUP (as opposed to handle which is
what they told me) and turned it... maybe I'll patch it or find a
replacement.

In any case, hoping to get it out - starter definitely down low so
perhaps it'll be the 11".

Seems that the truck is a 'Spirit of 76' stickered Custom if that helps,
but manufactured 1975.

Don't see much (anything) on the 4500 series on the forum.

Anyone?

Apparently, the tag which I found passenger side of the (4 speed
manual) tranny and which listed model #: 4530, gear ratio: 456
is a (rare, I'm told) variation of the 445 - there should be another
tag on the top.

1 st: 4.56
2nd: 2.28
3rd: 1.31
4th: 1.10

445 made for Chevy and Dodge and later just Dodge - not sure if
the variation was for both.

This from a tech at Timken and a friend of his.

These are apparently really torquey numbers - apparently
built for towing applications... ?

That is the close ratio trans and is much more street friendly/useable than the wide ratio version. The wide ratio trans has a horrid RPM drop when shifting from 3rd to 4th and would be miserable with a 225. It doesn't have the 'crawling' 1st gear some people like, but for a 2WD truck you really don't need it unless you're way overloaded, stopped and pointed up a steep hill. I wish I'd had that trans in my D100 instead of a 3 speed and would have kept it if I did, but I went with a 727.

From the Fourspeed article @
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-spee ... speed1.htm

...

Strength Considerations

Chrysler engineers decided that Hemis required a beefier input shaft so the standard 23-spline shaft was replaced with a beefier 18-spline unit and a larger input bearing was used to accept the additional torque. Later Chrysler decided that the high performance 440s needed this beefiness as well.

So, presumably, (me being a neophyte at best regarding transmissions - i.e. I know almost nothing), would a 445 have been considered a 440 and if it were geared low as described in the previous post would they possibly have beefed up the shaft and input bearing?

I'll obviously report back as to what I find on actually dropping it. - busy and slooowwww - but curious as to your thoughts nonetheless, - and when "Later" may have been...

Thanks
-DCello

Mostly I'm wondering if I should send the clutch kit back now or wait to see... maybe I'll find time to drop it tomorrow finally...

You appear to be confusing transmission ID (NP)445 for the 440ci engine displacement. The changes mentioned in the article were applied to the passenger car 833 transmission rather than the 435 family of truck transmissions to which your 4530 belongs.
