I don't seem to find more than 3 or 4 but am hesitant to rock and pry the 445 / 4530 tranny any more than I have on the sneaking suspicion that I've missed a bolt or two... Help? -m |

There are three on the upper inside of the bellhousing not accessible from the outside like the automatics or A-833/3spd bells, you will have to pull the 4 bolts holding the tranny to the bellhousing, remove the tranny, then remove the clutch cover and disc (6 bolts), then pull the flywheel (6 bolts), then pull these 3 hidden bolts...then you can remove the bellhousing...and pry the 445 / 4530 tranny any more than I have on the sneaking suspicion that I've missed a bolt or two... Good luck, this setup is a bear to get apart compared to everything else. -D.Idiot |

Thank you! I suppose if I just want to change the clutch and pressure plate And have the flywheel resurfaced, I may not have to actually remove The bell housing at all? |

flywheel needs to come before you get to bellhousing bolts |

As was stated before, the transmission must come out first. If it's just a clutch replacement then leave the bellhousing in place. It's not like modern vehicles with integrated bells. |

Proof positive that you should ask for help more often... What a relief to at least know I'm on the right track. Will give an update - haven't gotten hold of a Factory Service Manual yet - which I guess is obvious. Will update on progress and thanks all... -m |

Wondering, any thoughts on how to clean up and replace the seals? I'll look back through the posts now that I have it out. Came down with the flu so things are even more slow with this than before. Really tempting to open it up but I guess a lot of 'edjamacation' might be in order before I start on that. Notice some surface rust and plate screw missing. Rear seal definitely blown - lots of gear oil all over underneath. Not sure how to get that big nut off without damaging gears in the tranny. Anyway, that's the report - thanks for all the guidance. Will probably at this point pull and clean the bell housing. A lot of this crud is probably from unattended valve cover gasket leakage over time. -DCello |

Funny also, I asked Carquest to send the splined pressure plate and they still sent me the old style - which now I decided I like. They also included the wrong dang pilot tool, 24 vs. 23. I checked that the disk itself fits right on the shaft which is 23. Used to have a collection of tools but they're of course sending off for a 23. Someone somewhere said or wrote that extra (& stronger?) springs can be added to the old style pressure plate. Feel free to comment, of course. DCello |
