Yes, I am having more issues with 904s in my brother's vehicles!

Vehicle- 74 Duster.
Transmission- Rebuilt (by me) 1983 904T, shift kit added.

I rebuilt the trans a few years back and installed in my brother's Duster. The Duster lives in my garage and there isn't even one mile on the transmission yet. I have begun to move the Duster about to make room for other projects, and I have found that it won't go into reverse or first gear unless I rev the engine fairly high. It feels like nothing is engaging. I can hear and feel either the band or the clutches trying to grab until they finally do.

My first thoughts that I didn't adjust the low/reverse band correctly. Second thought is more depressing- I need to pull it and open it back up and check for clearances in the clutch packs etc… I am hoping to drop the pan this week and at least try adjusting the low/reverse band.

Any suggestions or input are/is greatly appreciated.

Look for problems with the rear band and servo assembly because the rear band needs to "apply" and hold for both reverse & first.
The good news is that a band servo can be repaired with-out removing the trans from the vehicle.

Thanks Doc. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can adjust the band/service the servo and get this unit shifting right.

Try running the engine with the trans in neutral (not park) for a minute, before selecting a gear. Might be converter drainback. Even if the first/reverse band doesn't hold, first should still work, as the rear sprag would hold the drum.

In reverse the front clutch and rear band are applied.
In drive (first) the rear clutch and sprag are applied.
In manual 1st (low selected), the rear clutch and rear band are applied.
As you can see, there is nothing common to both first and reverse, except fluid pressure, and/or converter.

Hmmmm, thanks Charlie. This trans did leak badly when I installed it and I never got around to locating the leak. I suppose a fluid level check and leak repair should come first. Then I will start looking internally.
