Post subject:  Spark Plug Problem
Any thoughts on this? Recently I bought some NGK VR4's and put them in. These replaced Autolite 66's. Since I did this, the engine started pinging. So I backed off the timeing from 10 BTDC to 7.5 BTDC. It helped as it dosn't ping now but my around town performance has gone down. I replaced the NGK's today with new 66's and feels much better. When I pulled the NGK's they looked like they where hardly fireing, as they where very clean, almost to clean. Is one plug hotter than the other? I think I will stay with the Autolites, which is what I should have done in the first place.

Hey Eric,

I'd say if the autolites work for you stick with em. Personally i use NGK Race plugs because i have good luck with em. Plus theres no way i can try autolites, they're not availible around here :(

Not sure if the NGK's are hotter or not, i'll have to call and find out :)

personally I perfer autolit #65 seems to like them, go with what works as I have to contend with CA gas.

I was at kragen today and wanted some new plugs, remembering this thread I asked for champion 66 plugs. I come back home and look at them... somethings not right here, these don't have nearly enough threads on them as I remember mine having. Then I come back and re-read the thread... autolite 66's not champion 66's. Whoopsy! :oops:

I'm about to replace the plugs on my tired 225. It has autolites right now, but I've heard a lot of good things about champion. What should I use? I don't have tons of money to try everything and see what works. :(

Hmmm, I've heard nothing but bad things about Champions! I've heard the quality has gone down in the past 10 or so years. I would get the Autolite Platnum #66. They lasted me for over 2 years, and would have gone longer, but I like changing plugs every couple of years. They are a little more money than the standard 66's though.

Personal opinion. I haven't run Champion plugs for over 25 years. I will not even put Champs in a motor if they are given to me free. It is a personal thing. If a person/ company treats me right, I will recommend them to everyone I know. By the same token, If I feel they jerked me around, or just plain didn't care, or had a poor product, I will bad mouth them every where I can. Treat me badly, and I can sure hold a grudge, unless you show me otherwise.

I had always thought highly of Champions, but when I had my shop in the mid 80s, we had a lot of high-speed engine misfires with the Champs. It has been a long time and things change, but we did have the time and money back then to do the research. We used the Autolite 66 in all of the slants that went through our shop, and I still use them. I haven't experimented with anything else because they still work well (if it ain't broke, don't fix it!). :wink:

Chuck, that is the same problem I had., back in the 60's. I sent several sets of plugs to Champion, outlining the problem, which was only with their brand. After Several months, and letters, I finally recieved a reply stating" there was nothing wrong with the plugs". They also neglected to return the plugs, "that had nothing wrong with them".
Since that time I have been using Autolites, until I started using nitrous, when I switched to NGK, based on the reccommendation of nitrous slant racer "Will Burns".
At one time, years ago, I also had a problem with Autolites, (wrong heat range in the box). Wrote to the company, They sent a very nice letter back. Apollagizing, about the mixup, offered to pay for any damage to my engine(none), and sent me a case of plugs, free, for my inconvience.
Mistakes can happen with anything, and to anyone. What counts, is how it is handled. Autolite got my business, Champion did not.

Does anyone out there have a listing of plugs and their #'s so we can see what the equivelent #'s are in other brands. It gets hard trying to keep all the brands and their numbering systems straight.

Charlie,

Spot on. We all make mistakes. It's what we do after them that makes the difference. I don't know if the NGK was around in the 80s, and perhaps my local parts house did not carry them if they were.

Rick:

As for numbers, check the parts database from the main page. Do a search on 'spark plug'. Also, for the rest of you, you can add a record yourself for any other plugs you know of. When entering, first do a search and then use the same format for your entry.

I still run the Autolites in everything, except my nitrous motor. Will Burns, put me on to the NGK's two years ago, for nitrous. They have a shorter ground electrode wire, then other plugs of comparable heat range. With the shorter electrode, heat is conducted away faster, so less chance of the ground electrode getting hot enough to act like a glow plug, when your are spraying hard.
