I have a 71 dart slant with a 904. It is leaking fluid out of the bell housing. i know it can either be the seal or the converter. It just started doing this 2-3000 miles ago and i wana know what im getting into. it leaks only if its full and it will drive for 100 miles or so just fine. Then when the fluid gets low the converter has problems engaging while driving and accelerating. Its a pretty big leak if its full, running in neutral. Before this it has had no problems so thats what makes me think its a cracked converter. |

Whether it is a converter or the front pump seal, you will need to pull the transmission. The local trans shop will sell me a reman torque converter for a 904 for $90. If you are going to go so far as to pull the transmission, you might as well replace the front seal on general principle since it only costs about $3 and you should inspect the torque converter carefully. The cost for a new converter isn't that bad if you do need to replace it. However, given that you will already ave the trans off, it would be great time to adjust the bands, install a shift kit, or possibly rebuild it. |
