Post subject:  Harmonic balancer

I'm having an issue tracking down a part for my harmonic balancer. My crankshaft pulley set has three pulleys instead of two. The middle pulley had a rubber sleeve/bushing between the pulley and, I guess you could it an extension, on the harmonic balancer. The outer pulley bolts to the balancer the same as a two pulley system. I'm having a hard time finding this rubber piece to fix the balancer, right now it's screwing with the parts that connect with it via the drive belt and is making an very obnoxious high pitched metal squealing noise. Does anyone know the actual name for this part, where I can get it from, or even if it's not the correct harmonic balancer at all? The 225 came with a stock A/C though it's out of the car and not operational right now.

That's because the rubber has to be pressed in or molded and only can be done by Damper Doctors or Damper Dudes and is not a user installed item...if it's slipped it means you will have to ship it to them for reconditioning, or find a new damper on ebay...if you send it back, remove your inner and outer pulleys so you have them when the new damper arrives (or reconditioned if you sent it out).

Hmm, that makes I bit of sense. Though it doesn't make sense that parts stores do not sell the part that I need to repair my balancer...

It is not a user serviceable item, any more than you can put new rubber in shot lower control arm bushing sleeves.

Yep...

Think also about the liability if you decided to install one using a sledgehammer and block of wood (I'd bet the outer ring would not align for proper timing after that by far)...even if you got it to force on...what happens if it came apart at 4000 rpm on an aggressive pass on the freeway and destroyed your radiator and fan and something else while it ricocheted around in there? (would you be like all the guys that put the carburator rebuild industry in the toilet because "it didn't work right?" and call a lawyer?)...that's why it's not a user serviceable item...

There is vulcanizing involved in the manufacture of the damper. You can't buy the component part for the same reason you can't buy the rubber to make your own tires. In other words, its more than the sum of the parts, there is a process.
