Wanted to know if I could tow a 20 ft rv ,3200 lbs. It has electric brakes.My 63 has a rebuilt 727 with a 8 3/4 rear. John |

Some thoughts....after doing just that. I towed a 20 foot Reinell with an inboard for 2 years on the freeway and back roads in Bellingham just fine with my 77 Volare but it had a Super Six two barrel and front disc brakes and the trailer had surge brakes. The two barrel gave it some nice power. The freeway on ramps are really short up there so getting up to 70 by the end was a chore. You just had to constantly accelerate around the cloverleafs and not wait to when you have to merge. It pulled the boat up steep launch ramps just fine. It weighed over 3600 pounds empty so about 4000 with a full tank and all our gear and a full fish box. My car was stock with no engine upgrades. With bigger exhaust and a distributor recurve I am sure it would have been a little snappier. Best rpms are if you can stay at 2500 rpm or a little more for max torque. Dropping below that you need one of Doc's RV10 RDP cams and Doc's duals to get more torque below 2500 rpm. You can do it with a few mods, but a 318 would give you more torque. A truck would be safer. I have done both. Cars and Trucks with SL6's and 318's. I can do it with my 74 Dart just fine, even with the Economaster. I do like a bigger jet in there though like a 57 or a 58. A 61.5 jet feels very nice but, the mileage drops to 18 mpg. |

How did your '63 get a 727? Going usually isn't the problem, stopping is the thing that gets you. I wouldn't tow 1000 lbs with 9" drums. Disc brakes and serious suspension upgrades are in order if you value your life. I gave up trying to make cars tow well and now own a D250 and a B300 before that. |

Had the trans rebuilt thinking it was a 904 and Ron Schustersaid it was a 727 and he has only seen a few with the adapter for a slant.Its an old taxi and it hurts to think that I might have to get rid of it and get a truck.Funny I sold my silverado to get this car

I put 10" drums all the way around on my 74 Swinger, 893 and 894 torsion bars, 6 leaf rear springs and Edelbrock heavy duty shocks on all 4 corners. It is stable enough to haul or pull 3000 lbs. up or down the mountain passes. My hitch is pretty stout though.......built like a roll bar. I would seriously consider installing disc brakes on all 4 corners for long down hill grades. So you can beef up your car or use a 3/4 ton truck. Both will ride the same. |
