This was my record backup run, and my average for the 3rd mile was 136.594 mph. That was averaged with my qualifying run the previous day for a class record (F/CPRO) of 132.85 mph.

Can't quite make it out from the audio, but I was starting to misfire a bit at 6,500 which we later tracked down to the rev limiter cutting in earlier. With 3.55 gears out back, that would equate to a speed of about 142 mph - assuming no slippage on the salt. It feels pretty drifty out there at those speeds, but it didn't feel like I was slipping much, if any, at the rear wheels.

plans for next year at Bonneville?

Yes, I plan to be back again this Speed Week. We're building a new head; bottom end has been checked out OK. (This is the 170 motor bored .040 over).

Just can't quit, 'cause we were just getting all things dialed in and ready to make some great runs - something in the 140's. That's an average for a running mile distance. Just reaching 140 or so doesn't do it, you have to get up to speed and let 'er run wide open for the measured mile.

The sound of the slant is music to my ears and a slant powered 66 Barracuda going 130+ MPH is a thing of beauty. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

I'm obviously a fan of Speed Week, so I've only got good things to say about it. Yes, I think it's very "spectator friendly", however the environment is something else. At the height of summer that sun can beat down pretty hard, and with the reflection off the salt it can get very uncomfortable. But then a big wind, thunder & lightning storm can blow up, too. The first few days of Speed Week sees quite a lot of spectators; they're lined up quite a distance along the course, from near the starting area to the pits which are at about the 2 - 3 mile mark. The course is a bit of a distance out from there, but the sounds are something to behold as well. My first time there I heard a lakester run by at 386 mph - wow, it just gave me goose bumps! I was hooked!

But there's more there than just watching the cars run by in the distance. The pits are open to everyone, and you can expect visits in your pit from just about anyone: spectators, fellow racers, photogs, etc. You can't drive into the pits, but you can certainly walk around anywhere/everywhere. And at the starting area you can get right up close to the cars. Pretty awesome sounds when some of them fire up.

Then there's the nightly social gathering at the Nugget Casino. Guys from all around the country drive in with their street rods to watch the racing by day and hang out at night. Lots of really cool stuff there, mostly traditional rods; some encrusted in fresh salt.

Racing this year will start on Saturday, August 9, and that weekend will be the busiest time. Lots of spectators and over 500 race vehicles. Then by Monday, race cars start getting broken and spectators start heading back to work. So what that means is that hotel/casino rooms are already pretty much booked up for those first few days of Speed Week. However, there are a bunch of folks that camp out or have RV rigs that stay at "The Bend in the Road" or nearby in the boondocks. Porta potties can be scarce there, and sometimes the parties go late into the night, but it's free and some place to bed down.
