I just bought a 66 Dart 270 off of a friend. My plan is to restore it and begin drag racing, at special events (all Mopar shows, nostagalia, etc.). I would like to keep it streetable for the cruise-in's, poker runs, etc.

The engine and tranny that are in it now are not original. Best guess is that they are from a 73 something. He also had a second transmission that is sitting in the trunk.

The tranny that is in it now is making a strange noise out of the front of it. I'm not sure what it is, but I am planning on re-building one of the transmisisons anyway. Given that I would like to eventualy run in the high 13's low 14's I'm looking for advice in building a 904.

I have another friend that has re-built trannys for military vehicles, that has offerred to help, but I need to find a book with lot's of pretty pictures. Any suggestions?

I've been reading (here and on slantsix.com) that I can replace the guts of my tranny with ones from a 904 V-8. What parts specifically do I need to swap? What parts do I need to leave? Any good place to read up on this?

Can anyone recommend one re-build/shift kit over another? I am assuming I would need to use a kit for the V-8 904, is this correct?

Can anyone recommend a stall converter? Is any brand better than another? Again I'm trying to keep it streetable, with some highway driving.

My thoughts right now are to build the tranny first, replace the rear end, then move on to the engine. All the while doing body work.

The 904-LA ( V8 ) transmission ought to have a different band, it should have a 'double-wrap' band whereas the 904-G ( S6 ) and the 727 have just a single wrap design. I don't know if you can swap this particular piece over to the 904-G trans, because the double wrap has a second band reaction pin mounted in the case.

Oh yes, the Low-Reverse band is the one I am talking about. The Kickdown band should be the same.

As far as the valve body goes, if I remember right, the 904-LA has a different body, I think it has a shuttle valve on the side, I'm not too sure. Probably the best thing to do would be to get one of each, and compare.

If you can find an old service manual, those are usually pretty good.

Don't be too frightened about it, the 904/727 is very possibly the world's easiest automatic! :lol:

I run a 904 that has had all the V-8 guts put into it. I also run a Cheetah full manual reverse pattern valve body. Trans has been together for 2-1/2 seasons of drag racing and street use. I haven't even had to adjust the bands yet. :shock:

If I reading this correctly here is what I need to do:

Get a 904-LA tranny
Tear them both apart side by side
What ever fits from the LA tranny use it, otherwise use the G parts

This is my first adventure into the land of tranny's so what is a "Cheetah full manual reverse pattern valve body?" Or more importantly why would it be useful to me?

Any suggestions on a stall convertor?

That is what I would do, make sure you have an effective way to remember where the bolts go.

Ay, Slantzilla, did you swap over the double-wrap band as well?
