Hi, I'm new here, and I have a '65 Dart Wagon with a 170 3-speed that I drove a total of about a quarter-mile before winter hit hard and I had to put it away.

I may have a chance to buy a 40,000 mile '73-ish 225, possibly for a decent price, from my machine shop, who pulled it to put in a big block for a customer. It is a manual transmission engine from, apparently, a Charger.

What would I have to do to make this fit where my current 170 sits in my wagon (that has a 3-speed on the column)? Specifically, I'd like any info. on flywheel/pressure plate issues, mounts, oil pan/pickup, etc.

It would be stupid of me to pass up a good motor if it will fit in my wagon, especially since the current engine may or may not burn oil (I haven't driven it enough to figure it out).

It'll work, you'll have to swap in your old oil pan. Flywheel is slightly different, if you can get the one with the '73 that'll save you a little work.

So the '65 transmission will bolt in OK?

That doesn't change-it's the same setup up to the 80's, so you can use either one (which is newer?)...the larger car might have come with a 10" HD clutch instead of your 9 1/4" standard, they both fit and function.

Make sure that the new engine has the pilot bearing installed before you put it into your car...

Another issue is that the 170 is shorter than the 225 and so your current exhaust pipe will be too short to meet the 225s manifold. This can be solved with a visit to your muffler shop OR by using an exhaust flange as a spacer to make up the distance. I believe that it was Doug Dutra who came up with this fix many moons ago.

OK, I talked to the engine's owner (a repair and machine shop); it is a 44,000 mile engine that comes with manifolds, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, carb, fuel pump, distributor, coil, etc.

What do you guys think it would be worth?

A junkyard wonder motor is about $2-400 nowadays depending on how proud they are of it now that very few are seen as much anymore...Craigslist is in the "FREE" Haul it away to $400....

Being used, but comes complete with all the stuff ready to drop in, you might see if $150 will get it (cash in hand), expect that it may go to $350 if it is indeed a running low mile motor. (Remember you won't be able to "see it run" unless the machine shop can bolt it up with a bellhousing/starter/battery and some fuel...)

That's the problem...It's been out of the car for a few years. Apparently, a guy drove a '73 or '74 Charger from Tennessee (!) to Michigan, where they swapped in a 440 for him, and they kept the 225. Apparently, the car had 44,000 original miles. However, the car is long gone and there's just this engine sitting there. It's a tough call. It's probably worth the money, but who knows?

I'd show up with a a bellhousing, starter and battery to run a compression test before handing over my money. Of course not everyone has those kicking around, but I do!
