Finally got the ol Super Six running after replacing the gas, the fuel pump and rebuilding the carb. While I was at it, I replaced the filters, plugs, wires, rotor and cap. The car had not run much in the last three years. Car fired right up and ran decent on high idle. Kicked off the choke and it settled into a too slow idle and died. Oops! Set the idle up to around 800 and it got back up. Drove around a bit and it had a flat spot on accel, so I backed the mixture screws out another turn, which did the trick.

Took it for an extended test drive and it ran great....for awhile. After awhile, it began to die at stop lights and was hard to get restarted. It is like it has a "sweet spot" where it runs like a champ, but maybe it is temp related. I have plenty of experience on smog-free hot rods and big diesels, but my knowledge on smoggy carbureted rigs is wanting.

Has any one else had this issue with their six, and is this EGR related? All the smoggies are still on the car because it has to pass smog here to get tags. So pass it must!

I think I'd check your float level measurement to make sure that it's correct...

Check float first, always has to be readjusted anytime the carb is rebuilt or the needle and seat assembly gets moved (tightened or loosened) and the engine relies on the float being right to pull the right amount of fuel in. If the floats too low its gonna lean out on you, and set too high your going to stumble and flood out...

Also re-check ALL of the screws around the carb body and base gasket, they tend to loosen up a little after a rebuild and a couple heat cycles... The bowl vent has to adjusted properly to help avoid any vapor lock or excess pressure in the bowl. You can also do the "fuel line mod" discussed many times through-out the forums (run a rubber line over the valve cover instead of the original steel line)

Last YES, the EGR valve can do that IF its stuck open, but generally that is going to be an issue all the time, hot or cold, day or night, and mostly at idle...

If you have the Carter BBD on it get ready for a world of issues. Everyone on here says theyre good, but quite frankly I think they are junk... Extremely simple carbs, but constant issues and adjustments... Im on carb #2 and a good couple years of trying to find the sweet balance of good idle, driveability and throttle response. So far Ive just learned to feal with the issues cause there seems to be no cure!
