My recent project. On my 79 Dodge b100. Sent the head out to the machine shop. all new push rods. new exhaust manifold. tried a reman distributor (fail). van would not run with reman distributor.(eventually will get another one to try) all new tune parts. And a reman carb. 1bbl holley 1945. my van is running amazing. im so happy with it. i did encounter problems that i would like to share. head leaked coolant out of every manifold stud as well as lower thermostat housing bolt.(high temp permatex on the threads). once everything was done.with new carb on it, i did have an idle issue. but off idle this thing ran beautiful. with the help of a couple old heads i work with we tried to choke out the carb while running with a rag over the top. it didnt make a difference. the charcoal canisters where pulling such a large leak, i couldn't even choke out the carb. i eliminated the emissions hoses from the carb and then boom it dialed in and i had the van doing 85 mph on the highway with the smoothest idle. so far so good with reman carb from rock auto. however i do want to have functioning/working charcoal canisters as this is my everyday ride. any recommendations? thanks to everyone that helped me so far.

My experience comes from a 1973 1920 carb, I dont know if it applies to yours (1945 probably). But, the vacuum port for the canister lies just above the throttle butterfly, in the side that goes up. At the moment you touch the throttle, the butterfly goes up and exposes the port to the vacuum below the butterfly. Check that the butterfly closes completely when in idle (check tuning screws, not idle mix but fast idle cam screw and curb idle screw). Check the manual link. Check here for info:

The other option is that the hoses are not connected properly; the canister should have no vacuum when the engine is idling

Thanks for that Dan! I have been helping a guy over on vannin.com repair/rebuild/replace the charcoal canister system that a previous owner removed form his mid 70s Dodge slant powered van. Your article will answer all out questions.

Yes, thanks Dan.

I recall reading this article sometime ago, but had forgotten all its details, and where to find it. It is now bookmarked.

I may update to this system on my 67 when I replace the fuel tank, and article will help to maintain my 82 LeBaron's under hood plumber's nightmare.
