| Post subject: | Recommendations for rigging a elec choke assist to a pre-73 |
I have a pre-73 exhaust manifold with the open choke stove hole and cup. Any recommendations on what will be required to fit a carbs-only type electric choke assist? Will it work, but it will just need a way to mount to the choke stove cup? Should I get the model for pre-73 with the two holes in the plate and slot it if necessary somehow? Just wondering how things will match up if I buy it. I'm totally open to fabrication. This will be hooking to a 318 style carter BBD. |

(1) easiest solution is get a different exhaust manifold (2) second easiest is to install the factory cup and install the carbs only choke thermostat and cut the part of the choke thermostat that interferes with the cup. The cup you describe is a one year only item. It is not present on all pre-73 exhaust manifolds. There is only one CarbsOnly kit that will work with the BBD, and that is the one intended for the later Super Six system. The choke thermostat bolt spacing will be the same as the spacing for the pre Super Six one barrel exhaust manifold. The ony interference you will have will be with the smaller opening in the well of the one barrel exhaust manifold. The carbs only choke thermostat housing can be modified to fit in the one barrel choke thermostat well. However, that cup is a notoriously leak-prone part and you would be better off getting a different exhaust manifold that didn't have the cup. |

1970, 1971, 1972: The three years for the open-stove exhaust manifold. If you want to keep this exhaust manifold, Fabricate a blockoff plate and cut a suitable gasket. Many have done so before. Then use electric choke 1231 for pre-'74 1bbl carb, 1234 for '74-up 1bbl carb, or 1232 for 2bbl carb. |

Hey Dan! Glad you are back. I thought the cup was 73 only. I was wrong! |
