| Post subject: | a wagon baseline dist recurve setup? |
Greetings, having a hard time with the recurve jargon....... What would be a good starting-point set up for a Points-type distributor for my car/motor (see below), given these 2 distributors (one is a reman w/ 5000 miles onit, good bushings , but bent shaft, and the old one has a straight shaft, loose bushings) Old one : R 11.5 mech. advance, light spring is yellow, heavy spring is yellow, 7 coils, vacuum pod 7.5X New one: Unknown mech. advance, but slots are same width as old one (7/16"), light spring is blue, heavy is yellow, but 5 coils, slightly longer end loop, vacuum is 6.5X, and has the hex nut shaped end, so may be adjustable. THe 7.5 X vacuum moves more freely than the 6.5, but both hold vacuums (vacua?) if I suck on them. Car set up (goal is all-around driveability and economy.....not towing ): 64 Dart wagon .030 over, calculated 9.0:1 CR Head ported, int/exh gasket matched Carter 1 bbl Dual exh 2.25" into collector w/ walker low restrix muffler 2.94 rear 195/14 tires Auto trans Later stock cam: Int. lift .270 Exh. lift 276 Int valve lift .406 Exh valve lift .414 OVerlap 26 Adv. int duration 244 Adv. exh druation 244 DAE int. duration 271 Dae Exh duration 260 .050 int duration 198 .050 exh duration 203 lobe spreasd 109 cam advanced 3 degrees installed Engine just rebuilt w/ steel gears timing chain. Thanks for any input(s). |

With a stock replacement cam and the 1 barrel, you are only using a small bit of the possible potential for the engine... I would use the best core, and pull the heavy spring out of it, and put the light spring from the other dizzy into it, and use the 7.5 vacc. advance. and see how it goes (start at 5BTDC initial and road test for ping- drive with a tach and vacc gauge to see what is going on)...With points you are somewhat limited by how light the springs can be or the advance could blow past a couple of bumps on the governor and cause a misfire. A faster advance would be more prudent if you upgraded your engine to a 2 barrel and an RV10 or the Delta 254 cam.... |

Thanks, Mr. Idiot. Is there a benefit of the 7 coil vs. the 5 coils heavy spring, AND is the blue light spring less resistant (lighter) than the yellow light spring? |

It depends on the spring tension, I've had mopar stock springs that were about the same one being a 7 coil medium wire spring and the other was a 5 coil heavier wire spring and they gave almost the same performance. Typically when I get a core there is no color left on the dirt and grease stained innards any more, so I can't reference that. I also didn't spend that much time on researching the points distributors once I worked up a couple of good recipes, they just can't take the wide variety of lighter springs like the EI cores without the points "skipping" on the fast advance, so they have to use a constant tension heavier spring that have a slower rate than the EI springs. I know that it responds well to the two stock light springs, and more vacc. advance just means possible better mileage at cruise. |
