Two weeks ago I took my block, head, crank, rods and pistons to the machine shop for inspection, correction, and modification. He fixed a rod, ground the crank (.010 main and .020 rod), decked block .065, and milled the head .015. When I dropped everything off, I realized that I didn't measure the deck height. He let me borrow his tools and re-installed the crank with #1 and #6 pistons. The bearings were still installed, so there wasn't a discrepancy there. Using his dial indicator with bridge, I came up with a deck height of .125 on #1 and .135 on #6. Well, I got everything back Thursday and started assembling today (Friday). After getting the crank and rods installed, I noticed the pistons still looked a bit deep in the cylinders. I measured using feeler gauges and a big, flat steel bar and found the deck height to be .125 on #1 and ~.121 on #6. There is evidence that he DID deck the block, but I can't tell how much, just that it happened. Would the adjustments done to the rods and crank nullify the decking? Were my measuring techniques really that skewed? Is there something that I'm just missing? |

Since "normal" deck height is around .180" down, your measurements are pretty close for a .065" cut. It is not unusual for your heights to vary a few thousandths. |
