| Post subject: | Newbie regarding \6 in A D300 |
I'm pleased to now be registered with the \6 forum, and beginning to learn. My present question is around a \6 truck engine I just looked at. It is installed in a 63 one ton Dodge, and seems to run really smoothly.. Here is my real question: My only experience with mechanical lifters is in a 230 flathead and the lifters make some noise when cold. This truck engine did not have any lifter noise. NONE (I do not know if it was warmed up previously) but the owner did say he had someone tune it up 10 years ago when he bought it, and has not driven it more than 200 miles a year since.. If the lifters are too tight, it will burn an exhaust valve right? would it also cause low power output? although it runs nice, it does not seem to have much grunt. I realize that a 7000 lb truck will not be quick, fast or sporty in any manor... but my 230 flathead in a 46 power wagon will run circles around this thing I am considering driving it 120 miles to get it home.. and do not want to burn the exhaust valves in the process. the present owner seems to know something about vehicles, although claims not to know much in detail, that may be true, and it may be partly salesmanship. he seems certain that the valves are adjusted correctly... and maybe they are..? Any advice and perspective welcome, thanks Jase |

.010" clearance on the intake valves and .020" on the exhaust. Hot and running is the preferred method. It's a little messy, but it's worthwhile. |

Ok, I'm all for setting the valve lash, Can it wait 120 miles? or do I do it in his front door yard?... OR will a compression test tell the tale and decide upon the results? |

Just adjust it. You can set it at .012 I and .022 E cold. |
