Post subject:  In need of some help...

Hello all, I have recently had a issue with my truck. A few days ago I was driving back from town on a back road and randomly it started to loose power and the engine started to stutter so I let the clutch out and babied it out of it and it was all fine and then another 2-3 miles the cycle repeated itself. I made it home and the next time I started the truck and now it idles very very roughly and only with the assist of me giving it gas. The engine is actually '78 slant that replaced the '83. Ive checked the points and they are fine, I put a difference carb off the old motor on and that made no difference, I checked the timing and that was also alright... The thing is all this started after the alternator seized up I put the one off the '83 on it and then this happened. I also noticed that it was charging ALOT on the voltmeter it was quite far to the right, further than I have ever seen it. Perhaps I have burnt something out?

Sorry for the long post. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts.

Sounds electrical. Bust out the voltmeter and see what its charging at. Check all the visible wiring for anything burnt, frayed, etc. Something may be shorted causing the alternator to charge more then it normally would, or something in the charging system itself is haywire.

Which ignition system is it? The regular EI, or maybe leanburn/ESC on that late a year?

I will start there thank you. I assume regular? It used to be a lean burn setup but that took a dump so it was converted to points/condenser.

Ah gotcha, points.

Check the balast resistor too while your at it. Overheating/bad coils can cause odd issues like this, but that won't affect charging. Perhaps something with the wiring when the esc to points conversion was done.

Odd to have points installed on a 78...

Burnt or maladjusted points, and or bad condenser would be the first problem area I would look at.

Thats what I thought but thats how its setup :?

Anyways checked it out swapped in some different points/condenser and it fired right up! however...still overcharging at about 18... so theres still an issue and I am sure that caused it. Going to try and go through the connections and see whats going on
