Hi there! I'm the pround owner of a '68 V-100, 225 /6 with the 904 tranny. There seems to be a problem with the ol' girl though. The gears slip awfully from 2nd to third unless I manually shift it or hold the pedal to the floor from a dead stop. Let's put it this way, if I don't use either or those procedures, the car will slip into drive by the time I hit 12 MPH. That's not right, what's worse is that it doesn't SOUND right. What should I do? I have a spare tranny from a '69 Signet (/6) but I'm an amateur mechanic. Any ideas?

:(

Sounds like your kickdown linkage is badly out of adjustment. Find the rod that is attached to your throttle linkage, down by the exhaust manifold, and you will see a 7/16"-head bolt. Adjust the linkage by loosening the bolt and pushing the rod back toward the trans by 1/4" or so and that will make your trans shift later. Move back by further 1/8-1/4" increments to suit your shifting taste.

If you have a factory service manual, the adjustment procedure is also described there. It may be possible that your linkage is bent, broken, or missing.

Hope this helps,

Lou
