| Post subject: | Bought another slant truck |
Just returned home after another slant purchase, pretty excited. Im the 3rd owner of a 73 long bed. Original paint that is mostly gone and covered with a nice brown patina but other than above the rear wheelhouses and a few other very minor spots it appears to be a very solid truck. I will post some pics as soon as able. Interior dash is from what I can see mint, seat is covered and dont know whats under there. Original rubber floormat which I have not lifted yet. Rockers look solid, doors look solid. Fenders have minor issues, a bit of rust and dings. Power wagon hood, mint except surface rust cause paint has worn off. Biggest issue was getting it home cause the trans is shot, slipping bad. Im assuming it has a 904, can anyone tell me if the 904 that is in my 83 parts truck would be the same? Im assuming they are all the same with the possible exception of tailshaft being a different length cause parts truck is a shortbed and new truck is a long bed. Suggestions on best way to deal with that? I was thinking have the driveshaft lengthened if that is an option, dont know how difficult it is to swap tailshafts from one to another? Any comments appreciated It also has the very hard to find steel interior trim panels. EDIT: Yep crawled under there and parts truck tailshaft is approx 15 inches and new truck is approx 18 inches give or take on both |

All the internals from the 83 transmission will fit in the 73 trans case. Or, swap the 73 tailshaft housing and tailshaft into the 83 trans. My preference would be to swap the 83 internals into the 73 case because you will gain a lockup torque converter and a wide ratio gear set and four gear planetary gear set. It is easier to swap all the 83 guts into the 73 case and that way you know the driveshaft will fit. |

Come to find out there is no such thing as a long/short tailshaft 904 so swapping tailshafts is not going to be an option. My preference would be to swap the 83 internals into the 73 case because you will gain a lockup torque converter and a wide ratio gear set and four gear planetary gear set. The newly purchased truck evidently has the 727 trans and I am pretty sure that will not be an easy replacement to find. I will have to do something with what I have. |

Nice, would like to see some pictures, I like the old Dodge trucks. If you need any parts for these trucks try http://quandtautosalvage.com/ Last I checked they had a half dozen 1972-93 trucks with plenty of parts. They bent over backwards to get whatever I need and at a great price. When I bought mine I hunted for one with a /6 and a A833 overdrive 4 speed. |

Thansk for the link, I would like to find two rust free fenders, bottoms of these are starting to give, pass side I can live with and repair but drivers side has other bumps and bruises along with the cancer. I think for the time being I may still use the 904 in my parts truck cause it is free and as far as I know the only additional cost to using it will be to have that driveshaft lengthened ( might be 75.00 ) I am not sure of the year of the engine in the truck, truck is a 73 but the engine has been replaced with a Jasper engine about 50.000 miles ago. The guy was meticulous and handed me a box of receipts for work he had done. How can I tell the year of the engine and are there any issues that I should be concerned with in putting in this later trans. I have read alot on here about crankshaft register diam but I think that may be earlier stuff. I have also read about the pad on the cylinder head that indicates year of manuf. but I have not had alot of luck finding numbers. Are there numbers cast into the block that might help? |
