Post subject:  Transmission Identification.

Hey all,

Ok i'm deciding on transmissions for my truck, so far i have an Aluminum OD 4spd trans, next up i have a T-5 5spd that i'm thinking of useing, and i also have what i THINK is a iron case 4spd, how can i tell if this iron case unit that was put in my aspen is a non-od or an od trans? the rpm drops arnt even close to my truck indicating to me that i think i have the non-od

The reason i want to know is because the Iron case unit was rebuilt.

Thanks for any help :)

Is the front shift paddle pointing up or down....what is the VIN inscribed on the passenger side pad of the tranny? Have you read the 4 speed article on this website yet?

If it's out, just put it in 4th and turn the input shaft. The output will turn at the same rate (1:1 ratio). The OD 4th is 0.73:1.

Hey guys,

D.I i read the article, but i didnt pick anything up in it, the way it looks as far as linkages goes its the same as my OD trans "BUT"! the normal shift pattern is 1, 2,3,4 well this one is 1,2,4,3 on the shifter "H" pattern, thus i'm thinking one of the linkages is put on upside down, what do ya think??

Lou, sorry its still in the car, it still has some paint on it (was rebuilt in 89, then was parked the same year due to a new vehicle and sat on blocks untill 2000 in a paved garage, then moved out doors for a couple years on a gravel driveway on blocks) so the trans is new.

its also "Yellow" in color ;)

I'm no authority, but I'd say it's OD 'cause of the shift pattern. If I'm not mistaken, they changed 3rd gear(to.73:1), leaving fourth at 1:1.

I'm not too sure on that, i know the shift on my Aluminum case OD unit and all the leavers are up right and its the normal 1-2-3-4 shift pattern, the way it should be, the iron case "unknown" one is 1-2-4-3 which is plane wrong. this is with all the leavers in the up position like the OD unit, if i revers the 3-4 shift leaver then the pattern is normal, so this is telling my have a non-od unit?

is this right?

Just the opposite. If you have a normal shift pattern with the levers all "up", that is a non overdrive trans. A normal shift pattern with the 3-4 lever "down" is the overdrive trans.
