Post subject:  A-435 truck tranny

Read the excellent tech article on the 4 speed trannies, and was confused about one thing: Is the top-loader A-435 tranny used in the trucks an OVERDRIVE unit? The article never specified anything other than the "granny" first gear...

I'm looking to use an OD unit behind a /6 in a project I'm gathering parts for, and wanted to know before I start scrounging the junkyards...

I think I could live with the low bottom end as long as I got OD in the top.

hope, thats a just a bull low truck 4spd, 1st gear is non syncro. & so low that with high rearend gears it'd be like a semi truck

I have a 77 1/2 ton, I do not know what tranny it has but I did use first gear like a regular 4sp not all that low and even with bad valves would still go 80 mph on highway propably faster if all six cyliders were working properly..

My '86 D250(3/4T), has a 'top-loader' 4spd. 1st gear is a non-synchro compound low, which I rarely use. Iam not sure what the official designation is for it.

The only time I miss my top loader is when I got to jocky my 56 airstream arround. The Yoke unbolts and replaces the ball and trunion mount on a early A 833 4spd and may be the best part of the hole tranny, for a six anyway. Bruce Johnson
