Just bought a 64 Valiant Convertible that is having issues with falling on its face. The car starts and idles with no issues...but when I accelerate it falls flat. It will occasionally rev with without falling but not often. It will shut off if I stab the throttle but will restart without issue. It also backfires at times. The carb was rebuilt by the PO but I tore it back down and clean all passages etc with compressed air...no change. I checked the points and they are new and gapped correctly. The distributer, fuel pump, fuel tank, cap, rotor, wires, plugs etc...are all new. I have not checked the timing yet. The PO did tell me that the car would surge or miss on occasion while sitting at a light. I did feel that a few times when pulling it into the garage or while letting it idle. He also stated that the car will run hot if driven over 55...he had changed the WP, thermostat, radiator...but it did not remedy the situation. I have let the car run for 20 minutes driving it up and down my driveway on a 90 degree day and it did run hot. Any suggestions? I'm thinking torque converter...not sure because it will fall on it face while in park. |

Is the vacuum and mechanical advance systems working as designed? Put more initial timing into it and see if that helps. DD |

Does it hesitate while in park and you rev the engine? If so, then the transmission isn't the culprit. My vote is for the accel pump. Had a similar problem with mine. It was finally solved when I got an accel pump with a slightly longer shaft. We're talking an extra 2-3 mm. Made all the difference, solved the acceleration hesitation. |
