Just aced my emissions compliance, HCPPM. required 300 Max, I scored 105. C O%Max. required, 2.50. I scored 1.18. CO+CO2%Min required 6.0 . I scored 15.9 .......OK woopy! right?....... mayby a trophy for makeing a 600 four barrel work on a 3.7 with aftermarket cam,9.5to1 compression and oversized valves? noooo, Its too Loud,, 105 db ,, 93 is the maximum our baby ears can stand with our little heads to your tailpipe when your crusing at 2500 rpm. I should say Ive been working on this a while to get ready for tags. I bought an o2 sensor and guage and allot of jets and rods, I'm useing a MSD6 and timing computer. The exhaust consists of Mopar six to one headers, 3" to 3" catalitic converter, a dynomax 6"welded glass pack and a 5" disk only supertrapp to control back pressure. Thought I had the ideal set up for street/strip, and not as loud as allot of the little tuners around here. But now I've got to weld in another muffler I guess, Ive got room for another Dynomax glasspack behind the other one, hope that gets me to less than 93 DB with out looseing the way I want to leave the truck tuned. any simaler storys to relate as well as suggestions would be appreciated. register your truck to a friend's house in Salem/ mid valley.... currently DMV shows approxiamately 4 cars per person in the Salem area...they aren't privvy yet to the idea of getting a PO Box in McMinnville and registering it there either.... You can always have your exhaust fabricated with a 'removeable' section so you can swap a section with a stock muffler on your pipe for 'noise' compliance...then go home and replace with a straight blank... I'm surprised they didn't do a visual inspection...I watched a nice straight 1982 mustang fail the test while I waited for my Ramcharger to go through...the dude had a 5.0 and Fuel injection from a 1988 car, but hadn't hooked up any of the emissions items (EGR...) they sent him home with a list of places to get it 'fixed'..... Eventually they will smog everyone in this state, but they don't have the budget to get compliance stations in all the cities.... You can also make your truck exempt if you can get a car club to have DMV issue you a 'special interest' plate.... Don't have to do that any more....plus those clowns don't know how to use a mopar 4 speed anyway, they forked up my Dad's test in 1977 when he had to smog his 'new' 1976 Feather Duster.... good luck, -D.Idiot |

Here in Ca they are pushing to smog all vehicles from 1960 forward, Should be interesting to see some state shop try to find my on board computer/ecm/xyz ect. on the 63 GT, agree will need to teach tem how to use a push-button 904 also. |

Dave, I read about that smog being pushed back to 1960... won't happen until 2005 and I have a feeling the law will change several times before that too... infact I could have sworn somewhere I read that the senator who pushed the law was already making a revision.... |

Think I came up with a solution, I was going to buy a rpm actuated switch anyway soon for nitrus oxide. I see no reason why I can't leave my present exhaust system alone (that dumps out the passengerside) and build a low rpm system that dumps out the drivers side. Y-pipe,solenoidand a few wires. So say at 2501 rpm everything go's back to normal. I want to comply and keep my truck from drawing too much attention (haven't been pulled over in 12 years) Maybe this way I can have my cake and bite theirs too. What do you all think? Bruce Johnson |

Good luck trying to get this valve to seal perfectly.... That and I don't think smog guys will like the look of it... I have never smogged a car with dual exhaust but I think they check both tailpipes |

Somebody makes a diverter valve for exhaust. I use to see it in JC Whitney but I think I can make my own. With the correct sizes both pipes would meet emissions even if there were a small crack to leak. I believe it would not amount to 93+ DB in the big system and I'm not aware of any law here that prohibits a street/ strip exhaust system. Correct me if I'm wrong. Bruce Johnson |

| Post subject: | No test in Salem/mid-valley.... |
I lived in Tigard, up to about 3 months ago. I never had to smog my Feather Duster since I 'registered' the 1976 car to my brother's place in Salem. I bought a house here and there is no smog. Most of the Portlander's I've talked to and even my old mechanic said everyone sidesteps DEQ by getting a PO box in McMinnville and registering their vehicle to that address. Like I said, there are over 1,000,000 cars in the Marion County area, and we don't have more than 250,000 people living here. The station I went to was on Cornelius Pass Rd., less of a wait at that station. I asked the tech what the 'standard' procedure was going to be for my 'old' car...she said visual inspection to see if everything was hooked up: EGR, vacuum hoses, AIR, then an idle test, then a gas cap test... I'm wishing they would 'roll' the date on the test to 1979, since 76-79 cars are about as plentiful as any 1970-1975 cars anyway. Good luck, -D.Idiot |

Cram some steel wool up the exhaust, cross drill a screw to hold it all in. Go get tested. After test, remove screw and gun the motor! (Pick up steel wool, so as not to polute the environment.) |
