With the Long Rod conversion, if the head is shaved, will the KB pistons be able to absorb the valve relief? This will run on 92 Octane Pump gas. Should I forgo milling the head? Just ordered a comp cams 64-241-4 "K" Kit. (4 weeks wait...) My piston source quoted a price of ~$230 for a set of 6. Sound about right? Thanks! CJ Valiant |

The 198 rods are the hardest thing to find for this combo. 198's were only offered for 5 years as a "base engine" (1970-74) There are no known supplies for NOS / new factory forgings, there are some aftermarket 7 inch rods offered through the Cox Boys. ($$$) I think there are some possible sources for used 198 con rods listed in the parts database. Your quoted piston price is "spot-on" but get the 198 rods "in hand" before ordering pistons. DD |

Copy that. I'll see if one of our local /6 collectors has a 198 or some substantial chunks of one. Thanks for the Reply! CJ |

At $230 they sound like Hyperteutectics. They will bite you about another $120 for rings. In all honesty, I have a 198/2.2 motor and I am not really convinced that the extra hassle of finding the rods and pistons is worth it. If I was building a high winder and wanted the lightest possible pistons, then yes it would. For an average street motor, I don't really think so. |

These Pistons are the KB268's. So far I've been striking out on the rods. As this is a street engine, perhaps I'll go in another direction. As is, I'll need to cut the Head down to make use of the cam. I'm wondering if the GM 3.8 Throttle Body set-up is going to flow enough air... Fortunately, I'm finding lots of options for the intake and exhaust. I've got two complete exhaust manifolds for a Dual if needed. (And the big cam is on it's way) Nothing like getting started a bit early.... I'll have my favorite machine shop rework the heads when the Cam gets here. Any thoughts on how much to take off for 92 pump gas? What is the thickness of the Felpro Head Gasket? CJ |

'Squash' height of the fel-pro composite gasket is .039-.043.... GM TB's usually flow 670 cfm... good luck on the build up... -D.Idiot |

You should be able to safely run between 9.5:1 to 10:1. I milled the head on my stock slant to give about 9.5:1 with no problems. Mitch |

I do want to amend my statements from the other night here now that I'm awake. While I am not too sure that the 198/2.2 combo makes any more power than a stock piston/rod deal, it does seem to make the engine very resistant to detonation. Mine is right at 11-1 and it runs on pump gas. |

Dontcha Love Ebay. Gonna have to bid some more I guess. I thought I saw an outfit selling 198 Rods for ~$35 a piece somewhere. Any leads on that? I'll go trundling about the articles again. Maybe I'll find something. At 670CFM I doubt I'll have any breathing issues. I'd better do something substantial with my exhaust though! Thanks for all the leads and information! CJ |
