Post subject:  Electric fans

This summer I replaced my copper Aspen type radiator with a Spectra CU981 which was similar in size and configuration to the Aspen but was made of aluminum. I have a narrow body car so the opening is only 18X20" and this is about the largest radiator that will fit. These type of radiators mount behind the bulkhead instead if fitting into the stock location. This means that there is very little clearance between the engine and the radiator and I have always used an electric fan mounted in front of the radiator now a Perma Cool 19126 which is 16" round.

The problem is that the fan does not seem to provide enough air flow (rated at 2350cfm) to keep the temperature from rising when you slow down from 80 to 65 or in traffic situations where the car can't keep moving fast enough. I know pusher fans are less efficient than pullers but there is no way to get a 16" fan on the inside of the radiator. I could perhaps mount two smaller pullers but they wouldn't cover much of the radiator surface. Any ideas?

Add 4 small pullers leaving the center open for the water pump.

Yes! 4 would be a good idea....I ran a 16" puller for about 5 years (it was so so) and then went to two ten inch at the top. They work great! They run about half as much as the single 16". The bottom half stays cold 99% of the time....

Since the air flow at 65 mph ought to be adequate without the fan, make sure there is a sealing molding at the top of the core support to the hood to close that gap and force the air through the rad. And if there are gaps between the rad and the core support, then these need to be sealed off too.

Another idea, this fan below will fit the smaller radiator and will cool a 5.2 V8. Has an integral shroud and you can find them cheap. Been thinking of putting one in my /6 truck. One caveat is that fan takes a lot of power on high. A standard 30-amp relay won't last long powering the high circuit, but is ok on the low circuit.
