Gents,

While installing the last engine I replaced the power steering pump. The old one looked rusty inside...mainly from the cap.

I ran plenty of fluid through it to clean out the system before installing the new pump. When the car is first started in the morning (cold) it steers effortlessly to the left and right equally.

The situation, after going about 30 miles when turning left you can feel a stiffer feel requiring more force verses to the right. What would be causing this?

It drives fine other than it requires more force to turn left. Recent alignment, tires are a 36 PSI, all steering components have been replaced this summer and steering box does not leak after all these years.....

Thoughts?

Valving problem (sticking) related to heat expansion? Loose fitting allowing air to enter the system causing foaming?

Did you replace the gearbox or not?

No, gear box is original, just a new pump and return line. No foaming.....everything is clean and bubble free, no leaks.
Works great cold. It just gets harder to steer left once the fluid warms up.

You didn't by chance disturb the valve body on the gear box when you removed the lines, did you?

Be careful, as any changes to that valve body could cause personal harm to you or others. There is an adjustment procedure for it and it might be the cause of your issue. I am no expert here so use it as a last resort.

Back in high school shop class we were re&reing a motor on a Fury. One of the other students (whom I did not play well with) removed the valve body from the steering gear to disconnect the lines instead of removing the pump. He thought it would be easier.
Well, it all went back together well enough, except one thing.
When the teacher reached in through the steering wheel to start the car, he almost lost his arm!
Seems if that valve is not adjusted properly, it can spin the gear box either direction at full force. If it's off just a tich it can cause the steering to be tight one way and loose the other. Sometimes even a bit off can cause an issue like yours.

IIRC the FSM says to very slightly loosen the mounting bolts and tap the valve body back or forward until it's centred and the steering is nuetral.
I could be off so you might want to look it up.
Ever since I never reach through the wheel to start a car.

It could very well be a valve centering problem, as well as some crap stuck in said valve, nicked piston, or a damaged "O" ring problem. FSM has inspection & cleaning & centering method listed. Get a PS valve body rebuild kit from Rock Auto or other, and replace all o rings and seals.

No, didn't touch it....it is very secure.
This problem just seemed to get worse over the past 10 years.

If it has been gradually geting worse over the last ten years, it sounds like it is possibly a worn out or out of adjustment valve system on the gearbox. Maybe getting all new pumps and hoses has exacerbated the already failing valve system?

Actually no, it is much better than before but not perfect..... it takes much less effort now to turn left after the new Saginaw pump was installed and the box was flushed with two quarts of steering fluid. Turning to the right has not changed. It has always been super easy...as in with your little finger easy....it has massive power steering assist. To the left takes a noticeable effort after the box warms up. Up until then, both directions have massive assist and it is super easy to turn either way.

Should I install a power steering cooler?

Does the box actually get warm?....did it ever puke fluid?

A cooler (like the cop car one) would certainly help if thats the case.

The only thing I ever had that needed a PS cooler is my snow plow truck....easy to guess why.

No, it never losses any fluid, but the steering pump does get pretty hot. I can put my hand on it but not for long. On local drives it just gets warm and steers either way just fine. The hotter the fluid gets, like on long commutes 2 hours or more it gets stiffer only turning left. Turning right is always the same hot or cold.
