What all does it take to change a aluminum 4spd OD trans into a close ratio aluminum trans? The crappy gear spacing in my OD trans is driving me crazy, and the gear box is making noise anyway, bearing whine. So I'm thinking a rebuild and swap to close ratio gears would be the ticket. Light weight case and good gear spacing FTW! |

You need every gear and shaft, except maybe the counter shaft, from a '68+ A-body A833. It's also possible that your existing input gear may have the same tooth count, but it would be preferable to keep the input gear matched to the cluster gear. |

Cheaper to buy one outright, than it is to part together a cluster set and counter shaft gear cluster....Josh is correct, you will have to find a compatible set, and if someone sells you one of the odd early 60's sets with the high first gear it may not work with the mix and match.... At the price these go for, you might also price out a T-5 conversion just to have a comparison (which will give you the tight ratio and OD in some versions)... |

When all is said and done a 5 speed is cheaper and easier. .....and way better. |

Yeah, I was hoping I could get away with being lazy and not having to search. Honestly, I've already got a lot of time invested as well as money in my A833 setup. The trans only cost me $150, but in between getting a Hurster shifter rebuilt by Brewers, rods, levers, the correct handle and knob, and a floor hump, I've got quite a few dollars in this setup. I recently acquired a second A833 OD in a trade, so my initial plan was to just freshen it up and swap it for the noisy one. The problem is that the gear spacing is miserable in the OD. |

I swapped in an Abody 8.25" with a 3.55SG. |
