Post subject:  Fuel Mileage

Many people ask about their mileage in their vehicles. Everyone's varies with a lot of different numbers out there. Last weekend Ryan drove my 86 D100 to Wilkesboro and it got over 20 MPG with every tank and a high of about 21.5. This was all driving 70 MPH the whole way. I would imagine it would get 22-23 MPG if you could drive 60 instead of 70. But you would get run over on the highway! Truck has a super six and 3.54 rear and OD transmission.

PS. The tank that he ran through while he was racing only got 14 MPG!

That is awesome for what is aerodynamically a cinder block on wheels! The benefit of an OD trans. (Compare that my '07 CTD Mega Cab gets 19 mpg at those speeds with a locking TC and tall wheels/tires, etc.) That engine must be pretty well tuned. Is it pretty much a stock super six or does it have some other mods, like higher compression, cam,....?

82 W150 4x4. Mixed driving 14-16. Highway 17 or maybe a bit more at 70+ if not for the steep Hills at 5000+ feet. Stock engine, 4spd with 1st being super-low (no OD), free flow modified exhaust (exits left side before rear wheel), Offy 4bbl manifold and Carter 400cfm AFB re-rodded and sprung for altitude and weight. Oh, 70 + MPH is only for the flats. Steep Hills at 5000+ feet means 2nd gear and 50 MPH. :-( Can't wait to get that big valve ported and cut head on! The extra bit in compression ratio should help.
