I'm swapping out my rear axles in my 8 3/4. I have a few questions.

1. do green bearings need to be greased or are they pre-packed?

2. The old axle came out easily, they are the same size, spline count, etc. The old axles had green bearings on them as well. One of the new axles (passenger side) went right in, the other side is stopping about 1/4" short of going in all the way. Is there a two-piece spline in a sure grip rearend? I seem to recall this issue way back when (I haven't done this is in over 30 years...memory is fuzzy). I think we engaged the first set of splines and then turned it more and caught the second set, but I'm not sure if that was a mopar or something else.

...after measuring a bunch, finding that the axles and bearings were identical in dimension, I tried putting the old one back in and it went right in by hand...so, I figured the new one must just be a bit cockeyed or something....I put the new one in, took my BFH and a block of wood, gave it a solid rap and it went right in.

Ummm; Isn't there a "button" that's supposed to reside in the end of the axle? As I recall, it puts some preload on the clutch(es). How sure are you that it didn't happen to move out of position, and you finished knocking it into the bottom of the punkin'?

...before I did anything I took a picture of the inside when I first pulled out the axle. It was the same after my trials, so no. I did notice a burr on the surface where the bearing rides, I think that was stopping the new bearing but not the old one. Distance of the burr from the outer edge of the race was precisely the same as the amount the axle wouldn't go in; I believe that I simply knocked it past the burr and it went right in after that.

Anyway, I hope they're OK. What does the button look like?

I don't think the last guy used any buttons, there weren't any in the axles I pulled and nothing was laying the case that I could see. I did notice some grinding on the ends of the old axles, not rotational, but from someone taking a grinder to the ends of the axles, I suspect to clean up some burrs on the end of the spline or something.

I believe that is the thrust spacer in place at the end of the hole...

If the old axles had green bearings chances are the spacers button is long gone. Leaving it in and running green bearings will kill them in a very short time.
