my A833 4 speed with short tail shaft and 3.09 1st gear pops out of second when I get on it and don't hold the shifter in gear I just had it opened up the 2nd gear looks ok, the yoke, the crank ,and the side cover seem to be reasonably good and I've got all new Hurst Super comp shifter and linkage and it's adjusted so maybe the sliding collar is warn? and can a guy cheat a little and moveing the 2nd gear notch on the crank with a little welding and grinding making the coller slide over alittle further. Actualy I would rather find a good supplyer of parts as I just bought a identical trans from Wildcat Wreaking, It needs Bearings and? Ive got a professional transmission guy helping me with this on the side but he has never had to get parts for this old of a transmission> Thought I could do some of the research as his time is a favor to me. The guy at Wildcat would only say he has to get his(personal) parts from" Michigan" any help appreciated Bruce Johnson |

Sorry, I can't give you specific help. I do know my Saginaw 4spd started doing that about a month before it grenaded! |

Try these guys. www.fatsco.com When I lived in NJ. I used to get all my auto trans parts from them. I have gotten a few TF items from them recently. I think they also have parts for standard transmissions. |

Two things can cause the transmission to pop out of gear: one is worn synchnizer rings, the other is the bell housing being slightly off center.Did you install this set up, and did you center it? You need to take a dial gauge and check th concentricity of the bearing retainer hole in the bell housing relative to the crank. Does the transmission grind gears on a fast shift. I not, the synchros are likely OK. |

d.V. ,,,it dosent grind during fast shifts, I traded some parts from the other used trans I got, the spring between the two balls was compressed .15 compared to the resent one I got there was some play in the yoke so I picked the best one and the crank that go's through the side cover these parts are better but still have alittle slop but the good news is that it dosen't pop out as easy. I dont understand the alinement thing please explane, I'm told that the syncros are done doing their job after its in gear but I have had some one else blame it on the(brass) sycros.. The engine and trans were bought as a unit from aparted out 64 signet that came with a factory 4 speed I just assumed allinement was correct ,should I be experiaceing other problems because of poor allinement?..Bruce Johnson |

I find the the main cause of gear "pop-out" is a worn syncrow hub and the coller the rides on it. (item number 12 & 16 in this view: ) http://www.dutra.org/photos/833-4-speed.jpg The hub takes a lot of side load pounding which can put a taper on the teeth and allows the outer coller to back-off. If the taper is not too bad, the teeth can be filed straight to reduce the "pop-out" problem. The best solution is to replace the worn hub. DD |
