Did any of the '80's model /6 powered vehicles ever come equipped with an automatic overdrive transmission? I hate to appear ignorant by not knowing the answer, but since I do not, I figured this was the best place to ask.

From all info I've heard.....No. It was only behind the V-6's and small V-8's. There was an adapter behind the slant in mid to late 60's pickups with an auto because Mopar used a V-8 727 for that application.

If you can find one of these in a boneyard, more power to you. There is some talk on this board about the possibility of someone re-popping a few for sale, so you might want to do a search on the subject.

You could use the '60s adapter with a slant six to A-518 or A-500, but it would work best in a full sized pickup truck. I believe the B and E bodies require only minor tunnel mods, the A-body needs major rework. The front half of an A-518 and A-727 are the same shape, the O/D section of the 518 is longer and wider. The A518 is about 38" long. All car applications will require a custom cross-member.

The color of the transmission fluid in my A518 indicates an overhaul is needed. Some of the heavy duty parts from the 727 and the A-618 (turbo diesel version) can work in the A518. This Ramcharger had a 3.50:1 rear axle, which seems a little steep for a heavy vehicle.

For an A-body I think the T5 manual is the best O/D conversion unless you are skilled at metal fabrication.

Yeh, but with the O/D switched on, the 3.55:1 x .65 = 2.30:1

Actually, the OD is 0.69:1, but that's still pretty tall with 3.55s and truck tires. I have 3.23s in my '68 right now and they work fine if you cruise at 70-90.

I can see the advantages of the Gear Vendors setup, too bad it costs so much.

My 1950 truck has 4.10 gears, but I have to change out that axle as the parking brake is mounted on the oriiginal transmission, plus I don't think it'll handle a V8. I'm sure the 2.76 8 3/4 axle that I got is not going to work with the AOD.
