I'm about to take the plunge and rip my '65 833 apart. The syncro's are embarrassing. If I've got it apart anyway, why not rebuild it in an aluminum case? I've located one near here for $50. I have a couple of questions before I start. 1. Will the guts of my '65 833 just drop inside an aluminum case? 2. I will need to shorten my Drive Shaft for the 8 3/4 I'm also putting in. Should I change over to the newer tailshaft also? 3. What do I need to ask for when I order a rebuild kit for this "non-standard" setup. 4. What other surprises am I headed for? Thanks, Mike |

1. Will the guts of my '65 833 just drop inside an aluminum case? Thanks, Mike You need to check to see if the Alm. case uses the larger "308" front bearing and larger bearing retainer, if so, that means the 65's bellhousing pilot hole will be to small for the larger front bearing and retainer. 2. I will need to shorten my Drive Shaft for the 8 3/4 I'm also putting in. Should I change over to the newer tailshaft also? Yes and Yes 3. What do I need to ask for when I order a rebuild kit for this "non-standard" setup. Order syncrows for the 65 trans but the seals and bearings for the Alm. case "later" gearbox. 4. What other surprises am I headed for? You should get the later "wrap-around 1st - 2nd shift fork. Did you read through the 4-speed article? DD |

The '65 tranny should have the B&T U-joint. You will need to swap the tail shaft to one that will work with the aluminum tail case. I don't think this is an easy thing to do... |

I don't have any first hand knowledge regarding the aluminum 4spd. I have swapped the early "3.09" guts into the later slip spline iron cases, several times. It's a good swap; not too hard, and good results. |

I intend on changing out the whole case. I'm putting in an 8 3/4 rear and have to shorten the driveshaft anyway. I figure the newer output flange is probably better anyway. Mike |

I'm using a aluminum bellhousing so I already have the 5.125" hole. |
