I was just wondering, I know that DD played with filling/grinding/welding a bunch of different deals to stabilize alloy blocks to increase rigidity and power potential. As I was driving along the other day dreaming about Dan's block he just shipped out and the potential for the Alloy head around the corner. So I go stumped at this: Couldn't someone have a deck made, gas welded in, machined and then have the whole deal resleaved? It should/would solve all the problems and still lead to a great reduction in weight (alloy/vs steel) plus the added benefit of better overbore options. The things I think about while driving and thinking about winning the lotto, hahaha. |

One time in Virginia....me and Dennis and Lou brainstormed a similar idea while standing over an alloy block.... with the predictable results. I wanted to completly machine out the sleeves and surrounding material (just leaving the case),,, bolt on a new top deck using the head studs,,,,and press in new siamesed liners. Bigger bore.....longer stroke. Potential for more head bolts per cylinder. ....and huge potential for draining bank accounts and sanity. |

Well, like I said, this is all just "won the lotto/pipe dream" stuff. With folks talking of CNC Heads, if someone has that much coin to dump into a \6, I think this would be the next evolution. You'd have to be the biggest \6 fan in the world coupled with someone with some serious disposable income, but I figured it'd be a fun benchrace topic, and who knows, maybe someone would get froggy! |

And by the time you do all the bracing, filling, welding, etc. , it will weigh almost as much as an iron block.............. |

If you want a really neat aluminum slant 6 go get a BMW E46 M3 engine. It's 333 hp and spins 8000 RPM.

Yeah, make an adapter to put a Slant valve cover on it and no one would ever know the difference.

If there were thousands of the alloy blocks in sheds it might be practical to convert some of them to wet sleeves. You'd probably ruin a few before you worked out the technique, if you didn't run out of money first.
