6/04/03--ok, heres the skinny on the car and its first time at the track
74 dart swinger
98000 mi on the 225 slant 6
1bbl motor is all stock
flomaster two chamber muff
14" open element air cleaner
have not done a tuneup, adjust valves or check and adjusted timing yet.
found best times to be when i raised the torque converter stall speed to max rpms on the line---the times reflect this
20.501@65.78
20.400@66.22
20.152@66.84
20.294@65.52(first round)
20.064@67.86
20.084@67.69

06/26/03 finally stopped raining enough to get to the track. went to bump the timing up but it was already done by the previous owner, as well as the plugs. sooooo, i modified the 1 bbl carb. i took out the supports for the booster and smoothed that and the parting line in the casting out as well as removed all that choke crap on the carb--i dont drive it in the winter. i also found that i did not have to drill the jet out as it takes a standard holley performance jet. ended up so far 11 sizes up from stock to a #72 jet. much better. so, what did all this materialize to?

19.530@69.50
19.424@69.99
19.201@67.45--first round, hard on the brakes at the end
19.236@70.33

the first 2 runs were within 45 minutes of each other, then the sun started going down and the 90+ temps and 90+ humidity went away too-- as plainly seen in the times a sit got quite a bit faster.

well ive been to the track twice more and the best i can get out of this bone stock 74 is 19.10. man, i was really hoping for an 18 before i put the header and 2 bbl on. it might have gone a 19.0- something at best but i was into eliminations and had to hit the brakes on the big end. i will post my times later. this thing was starting to be a great bracket car though as it always ran 19.10-19.20. not bad at all and it did it in varying wheather conditions too. just thought id update, been real busy and not have been on in a while.

ok, back in the saddle for another year. updates on the car and the first time out. our track, as most, have installed LED bulbs in the christmas tree, and i for one have to say i like it. still have to get used to it but not that far off from my old reaction times.
changes to the car:
this is what i have changed since the last time.
synthetic rear end fluid---still the 2.76 one wheel peel though
JR (aka mopar performance) header
aluninum super six intake
bbd carb, upped the stock jets from 89 to 94, metering rods stock
k&N filter in stock housing.

now i purposly left the stock 1 7/8" exhaust pipes on to see what exactly the induction system and header would do. i will be upgradeing the exhaust to full 2 1/4" soon.

first 3 time trials were as follows
18.997@72.04
18.833@72.29
18.819@72.51

not bad, a little disappointing to me, but its a solid .400 quicker and 2-3 mph faster. thats a pretty good gain from last year, but i have $270.00 invested to get there. now to the interesting part

first round was an easy race, i dialed a 18.90 and went
18.916@65.55 hard on the brakes to keep from breaking out.

second round was tougher as i was up against a multi time winner of street night
i kept my 18.90 dial, but i ended up going
18.662@69.71 again, hard on the brakes.

WTF!? .66 on a .90 dial and the car didnt go quiker than a .81 before that!?
man, i wsh i ran it flat out now to see what it would have really run. judgeing the slip, i think a low 18.50 or high 18.40 is what it would have run, but i'll never know. sooooo, the final result so far is i have gone from a best of
19.10 to 18.66---a difference of .44 from previous best, and
20.50 to 18.66--- a difference of 1.84 from the beginning times

and keep in mind, that this car still has a stock long block with over 100,000 on the clock now. on to next week as i signed upfor the points this year. till next time.......................

update--got the car to to its best yet, 18.44. still have to put a bigger pipe between the header and muffler (still stock 1 7/8" ) track conditions were optimal which is how i attribute this time. still 100,000 + mile motor, still 2.76 gears, still all stock (nothing removed to lighten it except the spare tire) only mods are header and super six setup. more to come!!
