| Post subject: | Kickdown/Downshift |
Hey Slanters... I've "super-sixed" my 225 and everything is running great. I have the Lokar cable kick-down set up and the adjustment seems right for power kick-down on acceleration. I am noticing that the downshift on when I slow down for a light seems a little abrupt, and perhaps at a slightly race-ier rpm than necessary. My question is: does the Lokar cable adjustment control downshift timing or is that in the 904 trans itself? Thanks in advance. |

Throttle pressure determents harshness of shift, which is controlled by the top slotted swivel that the "kick-down" linkage or cable is tugging on as accelerator is depressed. Lengthen the cable or linkage a wee bit and test drive, repeat until adjustment is to your liking. Now if you have a shift kit installed that firms up shift feel, you won't be able to soften the shift feel very much. |

Wjajr, I'm happy with the downshift under throttle, I'm saying that the car downshifts as a slow down for a light and that seems a little aggressive. I know the cable kickdown adjustments will control throttle-on downshifts, my question is does it also control the off throttle downshifts. Thanks |

Throttle pressure opposes governor pressure in the transmission. More/increased throttle pressure requires a higher governor pressure (road speed) to command an up-shift. High throttle pressure also commands earlier downshifts which you are experiencing. The throttle pressure system is not a simple kickdown as with some other makes. It is a vital input to the transmission and affects all the shift points. If you get the light throttle shifting correct and then lose kick-down then you need to change the linkage ratio. |

Greg, I have actually adjusted my Lokar to get the effect you are experiencing. I like it. If you give your Lokar shift cable a bit of slack, like a few mm, then it will soften the shift, but you won't get that instant kick down response (unless you have a shift kit). I think it is OK, unless you find it annoying. My tranny shifts at what seem appropriate rpms, but yes, it is more "abrupt" than stock settings. The key is that your tranny is working properly and you're not subjecting it to untenable rpms or anything. I like the kick down on deceleration as I don't brake as much, i.e. let the engine do the work, don't rely so much on brakes. Also, on acceleration, I get harder shifts. The A-904 is a strong tranny. It would be hard for a slant to break it, but you must have kick down working, can't operate without a kick down to make sure internal pressures are accommodated. Others may chime in differently on this point, but from my perspective you're fine unless you find it annoying. brian |

What carburetor are you using? If it is an aftermarket such as a Holley 390 or Eddlebrock do you have the proper throttle to kick down ratio adapter installed such as one of these that Josh mentioned? |

Dart 270, I do like it, and I'm glad you think it's not a problem...but I can continue modifying/adjusting: wjajr, I've got a Carter BBD (still jetted for 318–another project Thanks for your help... |

Hello. I am in the process of adding the super six manifold. Could someone post a picture or pictures of your setup on the engine and the tranny. I want to see if I have all or enough of the brackets on the manifold. Thanks |

Here are some shots on the engine...getting to the transmission is a bit more difficult The plan is for this to be temporary and I'll fabricate something a little prettier and more stable later. Overview: ![]() Lingage CU: ![]() ![]() ![]() Electric Choke:
