How exactly does the cable work? Does it push in and out as a regular cable would? |

Yes, both the shift cable and parking cable just slide in and out when actuated. If you mean the shift cable, here's video I shot with my pan off when I was having trouble adjusting the cable from the outside. (I guess when parts start to get worn out, sometimes the FSM adjustment procedure doesn't get you close enough.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpuanJ9l3gs The fitting which the shift cable clips into (with the little spring you see in the video) is on the right side. As you can see, each button in the shifter mechanism corresponds to a certain amount of cable extension, with Reverse being extended all the way into the transmission and 1/Low being fully retracted. The lever pivots and actuates the "manual valve" in the valve body, which you can see coming down on the left side as my assistant works her way down the buttons. As a side note, the little button you see on the inside of the transmission case is the neutral safety switch, which is triggered by the short, pointy arm on the lever. |

You could try and find the cable-style floor shifter and console used in the 64-65 Dart GTs and Barracudas. |

Yes, because the automatics in 64-65 were still cable shifted. However, I believe that they are year specific. SOmeone who knows more about the cable operated transmisions can clarify this. Starting in 66 Mopar transmisions went to mechanical linkage and there were no more cable-style linkages. If you are wanting to abandon the push-button shift and go to a floor mount shifter then I recommend you switch out to a 66-up transmision that has no ball and trnion u-joint and has the non-cable shift linkage. Uness you want the cool pushbuttons, I just don't see the point of keeping a cable-shifted transmission. |

Sorry- that should read "ball and trunion" front u-joint. Up through 65 Mopars used an older style of front u-joint called a "ball and trunion" u-joint. These are getting hard to find parts for and expensive to repair. See here: http://www.earlycuda.org/tech/ujoint.htm |

What year is your vehicle? What are you working on? If you have a cable operatd transmission, you will have a ball and trunion u-joint unless someone in the past converted it. |

FYI:Quote: 1968 and newer engine will bolt up to a 196[7 or earlier] trans, by using the 1968 up flexplate and an adapter bushing in the end of the crankshaft.
So it is possible you could have a 70 engine and a 63 transmission.
