First off I would like to thank everyone for their input.

Today I back flushed my coolant system, starting with the heater core. This nasty brown water gushed out of it. I flushed it for a good 15mins or more switching sides. Then back flushed the system, more brown water, but not as bad as the heater core.

I also pulled the thermostat and drill a small hole in the housing and tested it by putting it in boiling water and it opened fully. As I was putting in thermostat back in the water outlet broke. By the looks of the crack it was flawed to start with and was just waiting to break. So I pulled the outlet from my 77, and I noticed in the area the other one broke this newer one had extra metal for support, maybe this was a common flaw? If anyone has a water outlet they don't need, and I can buy it off ya, let me know.

I pulled the block plug and nothing came out, it was clogged up with this oiling crud. I clean a lot of stuff out of it but no water? I hope I got the right plug? It has a 7/16th hex head? and is on the block just below the #5 Cylinder? Anyone suggest something to clean this out? I dug at it for about an hour. Also i'm not sure which direction the water comes from or goes to in the plug? Pictures or drawnings would be helpful.

I gave it a rest and decided to put the plug back in fill the system with water, and add the Prestone Super rad cleaner. I will run that for this tank full. and flush it again. Suggestions very welcome!

Hi Mike. If your talking about the plug on the right side of the engine, just aft of the oil pump, then you have the right one. When I removed mine, I took a screw driver and jamed it in and rooted around some. If I remember right, I had to use a small hammer to force it in. Odd you didn't get any water out of it. The water flows from the bottem of the front of the engine around the cylinders and up through the head, through the thermostate and into the radiator. My water outlet neck has two gussets around the bolt holes to the neck itself. This is on a '73, my '72 (original engine) didn't have these, but was pot metal, not aluminum like now.

I added an arrow to doc's cut away block pic to the area where i've got a drain plug. note the distance between the outer wall and the water jacket. its an inch or two or three before you hit the cylinder and it plugs up very solid with crud.

Yes thats the spot, thanx for confirming it for me.
So I should just trying hammering strait in? I just dont want to screw anything up in there.. sense I dont know which direction it goes...?
I was able to digg in about inch maybe a little more.... and wasn't seaming to get any farther. Hammering may present a problem due to the lack of room...

thanx :)

Try a wire coat hanger as a digging device and dig around the hole in all different directions not just straight in.

Maybe you could chip away at it with a punch or something. Instead of putting the plug back in, I put a brass petcock valve in. Helps for the next time you do the cooling system.
