| Post subject: | Alternative and Cheaper Water Pump Drive Motor. |
For those of you running a Moroso or equivalent universal water pump drive motor: The Replacement Motor at the Time of this Post 6/28/16 is $70.97 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mor-97210 An equivalent Motor from looking up the Part # of my old Failed Motor is: PM 350 which costs $22.79 It can Be found here: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php ... 39&jsn=232 These are Just Blower fan motors that Moroso sells for 3X cost. Maybe many of you sage racers already Knew this; I always thought they kinda looked like fan motors anyway. I was Buying These Up at all the Swaps For Cheap, but I learned my lesson this weekend when My motor Failed and the Cheap Swap meet spares were junk too! FYI.. Greg |

I've replaced the brushes on my fan motor........... If it's not the bearings (although if you really try, I bet you could replace those too) the brushes are a cheaper fix...... |

I had to shake my head a couple years back looking under Dave M's hood... he had taken a stock heater blower motor, put a cheap pulley on it, and had it running the water pump pulley...even had a nice bracket for it....Nice to know there is a cheap source for new motors, since junkyard availability is a bit scarce now. |

Thanks Greg! That is good info. I knew they were fan motors, but my question has always been; doesn't someone make a little bit heavier duty one of these? Maybe they do. Rick |

The big issue is most fan motors have bushings in them instead of bearings. That's not necessarily bad, but you have to remember to run very little tension on the belt. Too much tension kills the bushings. That's why Moroso uses a cog belt and they normally look like they are about to fall off. |

That's what killed my motor Sunday. . Too much belt tension. Live, make mistakes and learn. Greg |

Also they are not made to withstand the amount of current drawn, in this application. They tend to run hot. It is ok for a drag brace setup, but for extended running, they will over heat and melt the internal insulation. I put a timer on mine just in case I forget to turn it off. |

You could always add the variable speed resistor to cut down the applied voltage to the fan motor......... |

I don't think that would be a good idea. It would slow down the fan and/or water pump, and they don't run that fast with full voltage.
