I spoke with Hughes Engines on the phone friday and they are trying to help me with a cam for my hyperpac equipped 225 and asked if I could find out what some of the quicker slants were running at .050 lift. Im thinking that with the h-p that I will need a cam that still has decnt vacumm for reasonable idle with the long runners. Hughes said that they grind their cams to take advantage of the larger lifter diamater of the Chrysler engines. So if a few of yall could give me some lift@.050 numbers I would greatly appreciate it and Ill post any info that Hughes can give me. Many thanks Mark |

The clifford 260 mechanical grind I just got specs the Gross Lift at Cam .290 and 210 degrees of duration at .050" This cam is only a mild grind as I have an automatic trans and would like to keep it streetable. |

Mark, They are suposed to be the experts. If they don't know what cam to recommend, how do they expect you to know? Under those conditions, I would be wary, about buying a cam from them. Also awile back back, a slanter bought a cam from Huges, and it did not have the hole in the rear cam journal, to supply oil to the valve train, and I guess there was some discussion about warrentee issues. I would suggest you contact some other cam grinders. I hear Ultradyne mentioned quite a lot. Compare the sugestions of a few cam grinders. |

They don't do slants. If you're building a racing V8, then Hughes can help. Otherwise... I have bought some stuff from them and had good results. (Heads and valve gear for a 360.)I would suggest you contact some other cam grinders. I hear Ultradyne mentioned quite a lot. Compare the sugestions of a few cam grinders. Their cams are made by Engle. I emailed Mark at Engle awhile back to ask about slant cams. The terse exchange follows: (Me) "I can't find any products listed for the Mopar Slant 6, though I know that Engle makes cams for that engine. Is there a catalog where I can find a part number for Slant 6 cams? Thanks - George" (Mark Engle's reply) "Same numbers as a V-8 Attached is some info, print it, and call for more info (310) 450-0806 " What I take from that is the grinds apply to either V8 or Slant cams. I converted the attachments to HTML and posted them to my site. They are Engle Cams 1 and Engle Cams 2 Maybe they will be of some use. |

You can try Comp. They have blanks in stock for the slant 6. They will also put a custom grind on it for your engine for about $194...I believe that is what I paid. tom |

I must admit, I plead ignorance about all this cam mumbo-jumbo. Here is a scan of my cam card. I asked the machinist doing my engine work to get a cam that was just a little "warmer" than the stock one. I don't plan on my son Aaron taking this car to the drag strip. It's intended to be his daily driver street car (1st one). We did, however, want it to have a little pep and sound good. So, did I get what I asked for? Where can I get info on what all these numers mean?  Thanks, Jerry |

From my conversations with other Mopar racers today it seems that Hughes has become just as big a hack as Indy Cylinder Head and Koffel.  I'll toss in another vote for Comp Cams.

My '64 motor has 250 @ 0.050" and has a powerband of 3000-6000. Idle is pretty reasonable with around 10-11" of vacuum at idle. IMHO, I wouldn't trust ANY cam manufacturers recommendations for a Slant. I don't think even Comp or Clifford have even studied it enough to know very much. Lou |

I dunno Lou, I think Tim Cole at Comp Cams is a pretty good guy to have on our side. He's been racing 6 cylinders (albeit GM V-6's) forever and is a National Record Holder in Super Stock at 8.72 with a Chevy V-6 in a new style Corvette. Besides, he's been gettin' some schoolin' from Mike.  I agree with the statement about Clifford though. I don't believe they will even do a Slant cam anymore.

Clifford just sold me a mild cam they call a M260 Turns out it was actually ground by erson cams. Still waiting for the hpak manifold - so the engine is not put together yet. The cam card claims .290 lift 210 degress duration at .050 (as I posted previously) cam card also specs - TDC overlap 40 degrees The advertised specs are .435 lift and 260 degrees duration |
