So: 1. Is there an ideal practical location? 2. Locations and reasons and results? 2. Would using two be a worthy improvement, MS3Pro has two Knock sensor inputs 3. If located on manifold side, is heat an issue for the sensors? |

I installed a knock sensor as part of the D150 rebuild, I put the sensor in the threaded pipe plug hole that is the block water jacket drain. This is not a MS setup, it is built using a gauge intended for Buick Grand Nationals. Caspers Electronics is the name of the company. What you need to consider is that oem's spend time and money tuning a knock sensor to a specific engine. Without R&D there is no guarantee the knock sensor will provide meaningful input. With that said, my knock sensor does light up when one expect it to, when loaded, long grades in higher gears, on regular gas, same conditions on premium it is much less likely to light up, but I think it is too sensitive as I never hear audible knocking, but maybe that is a good thing. |

Yours is only a knock indicator, not part of a control system, correct? I hear you on the OEM effort to dial in/tune for best results. Kinda of my thinking here, might as well place it well. I'm thinking, away from cam/valve linkage, not in the head, but close to the head gasket. Using the drain position, I wonder if the surrounding water/jacket might dampen some of the shock waves we are trying to "hear". Using two was because its a long head/block, and MS3 has that provision. On a Slant that makes the sensor(s) very close to the exhaust heat, one of my concerns, as i have zero idea how this effects a piezo? sensor circuit. Probably just chasing my tail, again. |
