Just curious how hard it is to install a headliner in my 71 Dart. I want a black one and the original one is green. Its in good shape but...puke green. Seams like taking it to a shop is my best option...I would just like to save the money. |

If you have the vinyl covered cardboard head liner, you can get a can of SEM vinyl dye in black and just paint it like spray paint... I did that in my duster and it worked pretty good for about 13 years before degrading.... If you have a cloth headliner with bows, then you can try to dye it in place, but for lasting results you will want to replace and you will need an experienced person to help or it will look like a shirt that came out of the dryer... |

It is the bow type cloth headliner. I'll have to take it somewhere after I blast the car. |

I think that all "cloth" materials used in non-antique autos are actually a polyester or acrylic, ie.- they are all synthetic fabrics. The SEM sprays are correct for nearly all smooth synthetic fabrics. Read the labels to be sure. Test a small spot first to be sure it doesn't "melt" the fabric.* SEM is my brand of choice, but there are others out there. Also, synthetic fabrics like polyester and acrylic won't "dye", as they won't absorb the dye. That is my experience learned the hard way. Others here may have other thoughts...? * Use several LIGHT coats of spray, not one heavy one. |
