I replaced my BBD with a BBD from a 318 aspen, WOW! what a difference! my throttle shaft was causing a vacuum leak and I found a really nice rebuilt BBD at the yard. I also picked up some headders at Carlisle on saturday once they are on it is back to the track. |

I finally downloaded the virtual engine calculator and turns out the Valiant was generating 123 horse power that day. |

I just got back from Englishtown NJ where they are having the east coast mopartionals. I was expecting to be running mid 16's the way the car is setup right now but the best I could muster was a 17.099. any way here are my numbers. you were alowed to take as many time trials as you like so I took 6 runs 1. 17.461@78.97mph(I forgot to put it in first and shift) 2. 17.154@80.06mph(I remembered to pit it in first but then went to D and lost a little) 3.17.099@80.22mph(I had a good launch with no wheel spin) 4.17.107@80.51mph 5.17.111@80.64mph(a little wheel spin) 6.17.191@79.97mph(even more wheel spin) first round of eliminations I was paired with a D100(I think) and I guess it threw me that he had a slower dial and I caught a terrible launch with enough spin to give me 0.181 above my dial to his 0.131, so I was done in round one. several people were commenting they were surprised my dial was 17.1 with a /6. One guy even remembered me from last year when I was dialed at 18.6. my final run was 17.281@80.41mph. After my second time trial I didn't use 3rd gear at all( I really need gears). my final run it was really cool to see that I had a much faster vehicle than the truck(he crossed the lights at almost 72mph). he left a second and 2 10ths before me and I almost caught him. It was really a blast. By pittsburgh I should have som 3.90's and a wide ratio 904 hopefully that gets me into the mid 16's I noticed I got a better launch at 1500rpm than at 1200 or 1800. 1200 I got tire spin and 1800 It wanted to bog then finally go. OK enough rambling I'm gonna stop now. |

You're running a stock long block, and the mods you've done do show improvement. You've got a solid 17.10-second car, adn with some appropriate gearing, you'll dip into the 16's. NOW...what kind of R/T's did you have? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ first round of eliminations I was paired with a D100(I think) and I guess it threw me that he had a slower dial and I caught a terrible launch with enough spin to give me 0.181 above my dial to his 0.131, so I was done in round one. ************************************************************* Now, you're gonna have to get over that little problem. Race psychology is just as much a "weapon" as nitrous. Don't beat yourself before the green light. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I noticed I got a better launch at 1500rpm than at 1200 or 1800. 1200 I got tire spin and 1800 It wanted to bog then finally go. ************************************************************* ????? Did you mean to say it bogs at 1200, but spins at 1800? BTW, that'll change with the new gears. All in all, good job. It's early in the season, and you'll get your "bugs" worked out. Roger |

R/T's are measured as 0.000 as being the best here at Englishtown. Mine were as follows 1. 0.582(sucked royally) 2. 0.752(even worse) 3. 0.099(not bad!) 4. 0.057(sweet!) 5. 0.115(livable) 6. 0.195(other guy got me by0.010) elimination 0.304 like I said I was flustered because someone actually had a slower dial than me. I just have to focus on my lights(actually you could only see your oponnents first light). I launched at 1200 the first 2 times, 1500 the next 3 times and the 6th time trial I tried 1800 and as you can see that was one of my worst times and speeds. The bog could have been because the engine was getting hot. when I completed that run(I ran the last 3 time trials all in 16 minutes) the temp needle was on the top of the normal range. I am beginning to have cooling system problems but thet is going to be another post. Also I have noticed that when I hook up after a burnout the engine speed drops to the point of bogging. thanks for repling |

OK its update time. since last time I fixed a MAJOR vacuum leak, advanced the timing from 2* to 8* inital, and swapped in an 8.25" with 3.21 open. here is how it went 1st time trial 16.993@ 79.5 2nd 16.878@81.5 3rd 16.845@79.63 4th 17.000@80.65 1st(and only) elimination 16.886@79.42 on a 16.99 dial, I let off because I knew I was breaking out. Jim Cox was a very gratious winner. He cut a 514 light(to my 709)and ran a 15.64 on a 15.6 dial so even if i had crossed first I would have lost 1st time trial I was not focused I launched at 900 rpm second I launched at 1500 and just bumped into 3rd gear about 75' from the finish line 3rd I got a good launch but tried to not use 3rd gear 4th I also had a good launch but bumped it into neutral instead of 3rd gear I was expecting 16.7's so we came close. traction was not a problem at all surprizingly. we are running a better gear and a shorter(marginally) tire with no wheel spin. next mods will be an 8 3/4" w/ 3.23's and a sure grip and a wide ratio 904. |

Ok I just got back from The East Coast MOPAR Nationals. I believe I was the only one there racing a slant. When I was taking my 2nd time trial the announcer said "If he really is running a slant then it is really running good because I think he is going to beat that new Dodge Magnum." The other guy cut a bad light then blew by me at the big end but it was nice to hear that. Here are the time trial slips. ![]() my first elimination was against a turbo PT Cruiser. He cut a better light but broke out by a tenth as I ran my dial. WOO HOO! I finally won an elimination! My second round I forgot to put it in first. As you can see I cut a great light compared to him but some how I broke out by 0.05 I had even forgotten to put it in first It was in drive and shifted into second at 3500 rpm and into third at 4300(when I would have done it too). I knew I was stomping him(it was a non turbo PT Cruiser this time) but it never dawned on me that I could be breaking out just letting it shift on its own. Dan smacked me in the head for not tapping the brakes when that far a head. oh well next time I guess. Here are the elimination slips. ![]() Over all a good showing for the slant I did have a quicker dial than 4 of the V8's and the non turbo PT Cruiser. Every time I was up the announcer reminded the small crowd that there was only a slant moving that little green Valiant like that. P.S. sorry for the size of the scan I just wanted the slips to be read able and I forgot to mention I was car number 226 If I had gotten in line one car sooner I would have won it all |

Looks great, Phil! Pretty consistent times too - nice for bracket racing. Looks like your lights are getting better too. You'll be in the 15s before you know it... Keep up the great work. Any plans to come to a Slant race this year? Lou |

I would love to make it to a slant race but the closest one is in Colombus Ohio and that is a 12 hour drive. I just started a new job 2 and a half months ago, and just got full time status last Sunday. Maybe next year I can schedule a 4 day weekend and get to one. I hope that my big bottle neck is the BBD, I have a 465cfm Holley that I would like to install. I just need an intake. There is a speed shop near me that has been around since the 70's.I have to get over there and hope to find a treasure in their bin-o-old parts. Dan was talking to a guy yesterday that told him he picked up an offie double two barrel intake last week from there. I really missed the boat on that one. |

I would say the BBD is definitely a limiter if you're in the low 16s. Holley 350 or 500 2bbl, or 390 or 500 carb (edel my fave) would be a big step up. Lou |

I was really dissapointed after my 2 time trials that I wasn't any quicker than last time. I had spent all the time and money to get the 4-barrel on and look I'm still only running 16.4's I noticed a week or 2 ago that the trans seemed a little funny at times but now I know it is slipping a bit. All but one of my 60' times in may were faster than on Sunday and now it takes I'd say almost a second to shift into second when I'm standing on it. Oh well now I have a really good reason to dive into the van trans I've had sitting in the garage for the last year and a half. Hopefull the lower first and second will get me into the 15's the next time I go racing. It was really a blast to win the trophy class though. here are the time slips from Sunday I'm car #501 ![]() The Camaro beat me by a tenth after redlighting but I would have had him if the trans wasnt slipping. I am building a web site where you can see a couple of pics from sunday come check it out! http://home.comcast.net/~stoneback6/wsb ... html-.html |

I cant believe I have not given an up date in over a year and a half. Well last year I had a problem at E-town turns out I stripped 1/8th" off of the splines on my axles. The green bearings moved the axles out far enough that they had minimal contact with the inner splines on the sure grip. I borrowed a different set of 3.91's to use at Pittsburgh (thanks Charlie) last year but had a blown power valve and could not get better than a 16.75. Yesterday at E-town I ran a best of 16.85@80mph with my 3.23's. I was thinking it should have been in the 16.50's. Something just isn't right. Either I really need a cam or I am beginning to think it is somthing in the used Van trans I am running. Hopefully this fall I will be swapping in an 833-OD. So far I have the trans and flywheel, now all I need are the shifter and linkage, floor hump, clutch and fork, Z-bar, pedals, drive shaft. I also am going to be swapping to manual steering soon. I have the box and pitman arm I just need to decide how I am going to make up the difference in length. Spend $120 for an adapter or try to fab something up. |

Just got back from Pittsburgh and now I believe that this Holley is too much carb for my cam. I am going to attempt to find a staged 2bbl and an adapter for my clifford until I can get e bigger cam, any hoo here are some numbers. 1st time trial .094 rt 17.21@78.88mph 2nd time trial .085 rt 17.15@78.96mph 3rd time trial .009 rt 17.09@79.52mph 1st elimination round .042 rt 17.29@78.42 won other guy broke out 2nd elimination round .069 rt 17.21@78.85 Re ran cause other guy whined -.008rt17.12@79.52 Car was very consistant and my rt are good but this thing is so much slower with the 4bbl and 3.23's |
