Hello again,

Well after much investigation, I am convinced that I need to advance the camshaft 6 degrees to make this thing idle. Does anybody sell a bushing for advance/retarding cams for a slant six??

Also, has anybody ever had an issue with a later timing gear being retarded for the purpose of emissions on a slant six. I heard that the later gears have 4 degrees of retard built into them for specifically this purpose.

Thanks,

Tim

Mopar Performance used to sell a set for the small & big blocks, but they are meant to be used with the double roller timing chain....

It is not uncommon to find these gears way off time.
Mr Gasket sells a bushing kit, I think it's the same as the SB Chebby.

These days I don't use the bushings, I just oval out the gear hole in the direction I need to move the cam, then place a shim into the empty space on the other side of the dowel pin. I use a drgree wheel to show me how much to move. In my last engine build-up I use a flattened piece of coat hanger wire as a shim! I cover-up the pin - shim area with a bigger washer under the cam gear bolt just for piece of mind.

Cox boys also sell a timming gear - chain set that has multi keyways in the crank gear that also allows cam advance adjustment.

The Mr Gasket offset bushing kit for a chevy works. But I have found , you wind up a little short on the amount of change. IE a 6 degree bushing will only give about 5 degrees of change. I have the Cox Bros. chain and multi keyway gear set in my enginge, but use the offset bushings. I think it is easier to change the bushing, then to pull the gear off the crank, with a puller, and take a chance of damaging the gear.

I use one of the MP bushing kits. Drill the hole in the cam gear out to 3/8" and install whatever bushing your degree wheel tells you you need. It doesn't have to be a roller chain set either.
