Okay so I found a deal on a running slant 6 225 for 150$. I'm gonna buy it and tear it down. Unknown year right now. But I am planning to build a hot street motor for my dart. I want it to be mean as can be. I want it to be street legal but idc if it's streetable. It'll be more of a weekend warrior. So I was gonna start by putting in the 2.2 turbo pistons with the rest of the stock bottom end. Then a milled and ported head with .170 .144 valves installed. Also an offey intake and a 4bbl carb. But my question is what cam should I get. I have the list from Oregon cam grinds but idk how extreme to go. I want as big as possible for my set up. I want the idle to be really lumpy. Id want it to rev up pretty high as well and perform like a big cam should. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help and how big of a carb should I run to match up with the cam[/i]

Let's make sure we got the picture... so mileage doesn't matter? If it's an automatic you will need to address that and the stall convertor....(and better rear gearing and not a 7 1/4" rear...to handle the higher rpm power band of the bigger cam..and brakes....)

The 2.2 turbo pistons need the 7" rods out of a 198, you have these in hand already? If not, stock oversize pistons and 225 rods will be OK for his build, and save you some $$$ anyway.

OK, the Offy is the bottle neck in the "wild build"...With and Offy and ??? for exhaust you'll probably target about 10:1 to 10.3 static compression... if this had been a clifford and headers... then you could go more as a sunny day driver...

Going 10:1 or a bit more with an offy the OCG 346 should be fine and little lumpy... if you need less cam due to restrictions of the build and or streetability, then the 791 would be the better choice. Either of these will rev to 6000 rpm if the build is done right... if you have an automatic, you won't get to that point on the the street.

For street and Edelbrock carb in 500 cfm would be plenty....

Sounds like you want a high stall torque converter. Give that some thought as to how much stall you can live with, then we can talk about cam and compression. I like 2800-3000 rpm stall for a fairly hot street combo.

I agree a Clifford 4bbl intake and headers will breathe best, but you can make a stout motor w/o them as long as you don't want to rev much past 5000 or 5500.

Cylinder head porting is your biggest opportunity to make power.

Lou

As for a converter 3000 stall sounds good to me. But down the road this setup may be run with a 4 speed manual trans. And I can get the Clifford intake instead if that's better along with the headers. Now what kind of duration would I look for. Ik for the lsa I would like 108-106 for some lumpiness and 500 and some for lift. Do those numbers sound good? I can buy the stock pistons instead and maybe bore it like 40 or 60 over if it needs it. And how much lift can a stock head take. Would I have to get it clearanced. Oh and I have a power steering car so is it possible to still use header with my stock steering or should I get a manual steering unit

Oh and I looked at the 346 cam grind. Looks good but seems a little low on lift. Is there a reason for that. I'm not a cam expert just wondering. And what kind of hp is that cam capable of. Thanks

Oh and I was looking at the cam grinds... I'm guessing the 1192D grind is way too big but I thought I'd ask. I want this thing to be really mean. As much power as I can get lol. If I ran that cam what else would need to go along with it

No that lift is OK for that duration... that cam would put you in the 190-200 range depending on your compression, and porting....

If you are changing to a clifford and headers you can go 11:1 and use a 549 ground to a 108 LSA... it will be lumpy.... you will have to do a fair amount of porting on the head, and make sure you build the engine correctly... it will get you into the 1hp/CID range or more if built correctly...

It will breathe easier, but won't like colder weather...

You will need to research this as there aren't many options for clutches that can handle the added power especially if you do a high speed clutch dump....

You can take a .250 cut off the head and deck and still use grind 549...

Will I be able to run 11:1 on 93oct? And what more would it take with the 549 cam ground to 108 lsa. 11:1 cr. 600 double pumper. clifford intake. Headers. Head ported and big valves installed. Depending on the porting job is 250 hp achievable

Please see the engine build matrix thread.

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... c&start=15

250 HP is doable with a good cylinder head port job and 93 octane on 10.5-11:1. Please post cam specs here so we don't have to go look them up.

Thanks,

Lou

Here are the grinds that have been expressed:

791 = 230/230 @ 050 108LSA .483/.489 Lift At 1.5

Works fine for 10:1 build...

346 = 234/228 @ 050 106LSA .473/.479 at 1.5

Works similar to Erson 280/270 if LSA is closer to 109, 106 will be a little lumpy 10:1 also for build...

1192 = 231/254 @ 050 105LSA .558/.537 at 1.5

This is a traditional cam for most other brands with headers, is a bit light on the intake lobe for the ratio of duration to lift...

549 = 248/248 @ .050 112 LSA .539/.539 at 1.5

I have used this on a 11.7:1 at 111 LSA, and 12.1 at 109 LSA.... DCR was 9:1 and engines were broke in and run on 92 (supplemented with 110 at the track)... 111 LSA has a 16" idle at 900 rpm, 14" in gear was run with a 600 cfm Holley 4150 Vacuum Secondary (no slant needs a double pumper) with each setup, 250 HP was doable, not sure how long the valve guides would last due to shortening during port job (you will spend a good 8 hours minimum working the ports over)....Idle was lumpy but not bad like an overcammed V-8... that being said, for the performance level and MPG with the 600 holley, it closely matches the 383-2v B-Body I used to own....

Now back to... sounds "mean", streetability, and is mileage important?

Power Steering should not be a problem, but your transmission cooler lines may need to be adjusted/rerouted out of the hot zone with headers...

225s like lots of duration and tight LSAs. I would run the 549 with 106 LSA and 10.5 or 11:1 static comp on pump gas, with the right ign timing curve... That is almost identical to what I ran in my 64 Dart from 1996 through 2013. Install it at 100 deg (intake centreline). 3000 stall minimum (3200-3500 preferred) or run a stick. I got 23-26 MPG with that combo with the 5spd and it made 250 HP. It'll be lumpy enough for you.

Lou
