| Post subject: | Help - Oil leak from sending unit |
I have a 64 Dart GT w/ 225. It just developed an oil leak (spraying oil in multiple directions) from the sending unit. I have not had a chance to look closely at this yet, but curious if anyone has any insite on what I am facing. Can this just be a gasket failure or ?? What do I need to replace it? I could find no info in the manual on the sending unit. Any thoughts?? |

that was a real common problem, esp. on cars w/ idiot light instead of a gauge. From so many heat up/cool down cycles, the plastic gets brittle, and leaks right where the metal is crimped around the plastic half. On that car should be a cheap find, too. Some of the General Junk ones are over $50.,with a retail (if you go to a garage and have it put in, what the garage would get you for it, over $100. That's just the PART! then most won't touch a thing on your car for less than 1/2 an hour labor, even though most are 10 minute jobs including the time to jack it up! Yours oughtta cost ya $10. or less. For that go ahead and change it anyway, cheap insurance against blowing up your engine by running it dry on oil! |

Thanks for the input...I replaced the sending unit with a new one from Advance Auto Parts...cost $5.82. No leaks and the idiot light goes off. The scary part?? I lost 2 quarts of oil in about 1 mile...and didn't know it until I pulled into my driveway and noticed the oil trail down the street and the puddle under the car! It could have cost much more than $5.82!! Dave |

Dave, glad to know the problem is solved, also lost about two quarts. but I was doing 75 at the time in 90 degree temps. Amazing what a long drive will turn up. |
