Post subject:  Engine Rebuild - Distributor Install

I recently completed the rebuilt of a 68 Slant 6. Only thing left to do is install the carburetor and distributor. I am waiting on new carb to be built. But, I have the distributor.
Problem is, I don't know how to install it. I have piston 1 at TDC on compression, but that's as far as I've gotten.

How do I get everything lined up?
How do I figure out which pin should be pin 1?
How do I know if damper should be before or after 0?
Where should the rotor be pointing at install?

I don't have this engine's manual.

I'm struggling with the distributor. Any help would be appreciated. (Video would be awesome.)

Thanks

Your rotor should point to roughly 4:00 for the № 1 (frontmost) cylinder. See here for more detail.

Other then plug wire convenience, it doesn't matter which post on the distributor you use for #1. As long as you follow the right plug wire order and rotation, and of course the rotor's pointing to the post hooked to #1, you'll be in good shape.

Not sure what you mean by the damper before or after zero. If your at TDC compression #1, then the damper is at zero. If it's not, then your damper either slipped, your not truly at TDC compression #1, or your using the wrong timing mark. Some aftermarket dampers have multiple marks for the different timing tab locations used along the years

Do you have the firing order for that engine?

1-5-3-6-2-4

1 is by the radiator, 6 is by the firewall.

Okay, I have the distributor installed. Attached are some pictures. Does it look correctly installed?

It is pressed in all the way and rotates correctly. But, there is still a gap. What's missing? What is the bolt for?

Also attached is an image of the damper and water pump pulleys. They align, but the front pulley on the damper is off by itself. What is the belt configuration for this engine?

no

It is not all the way down, and the adjustment plate is missing. The bolt holds the adj plate.

Do you have air conditioning?
The rear pulley is for the A/C compressor, water pump.
The middle pulley is for the water pump and alternator.
The front pulley is for the power steering pump

As far as positioning - pointing to the number 1 piston - does it look correct?

The rail on the back side of the distributor is preventing it from going down any further. Would the adjustment plate fill that gap?

Thanks for that info...

Conventionally, on a slant six the rotor does not point at the #1 cylinder when the #1 cylinder is at TDC. As Dan said earlier, the rotor usually points to roughly the 4-5 o'clock position as you look down at the distributor.

However, given the fact the rotor spins in a circle, you can point it wherever you want to long as you maintain the correct plug wire firing order on the cap.

Here are a couple of shots of the early style distributor plate.

Thanks for the help guys. I found the missing bracket (on the old distributor), got it mounted, and installed the distributor.

More to come...
