It's "Stupid Question Time," and I thank you for your patience with me! I'm rebuilding a '67 Dart 270. It has 9" drums all around with 13" wheels mounted on 5x4" SBP. Since I can't find quality 13" tires, and because using 9" drums on a modern highway is a recipe for death, I want to upgrade to disc brakes all around. I think it would be wise to also upgrade to 15" wheels. I assume I will have to go from 5x4" SBP to 5x4.5" BBP for 15" wheels. Am I able to do this while keeping my 7 1/4" rear axle? Or ought I go junkyard diving for a larger rear axle and a driveshaft? (FWIW, I am restoring the 225 slant and the A904 transmission in the Dart to factory specs, if that makes a difference in your advice.) Thanks, in advance! |

I have purchased 5x4 15"x 7" and 6" steel wheels. They are available still I believe |

They made 7 1/4 axles with the larger 5x4.5 bolt pattern, but if you are swapping axles, why stay with that inferior design? These days the best bang for your buck is likely the swap to the Ford Explorer axle. That swap has been covered elsewhere on this site, but it gets you a peppier gear ratio, disc brakes, and the 5x4.5 bolt pattern all in one go. |

Rick@Layson's advertised a powder-coated set of SBP 15x6" rallye's over on FABO a while ago, not sure if they sold yet, but I didn't think the price was bad for them. FWIW, I hauled My '69 Dart Custom w/a smallblock down from ~100mph at the strip and hit the first turnaround w/o a problem. That still had the 9" frt. drums on it. Unless You have the car loaded down for a trip or expect to stop hard repeatedly, they work OK serviced & adj. correctly. That said, I'd never discourage any improvements, just an FYI. Just keep in mind that better tires and brakes also put more load & stress on the suspension, the bushings and joints better be good, or there will be unsafe amounts of movement when turning &/or stopping hard. |
