I have a block to use to replace a block with cracks in the cylinder walls. Replacement block only has 3 out of 4 main caps... one is missing. So i have to source a new cap for that missing one. Does this mean i have to get the block align honed to get everything correct? Thanks, Greg |

Yes. How much race engine are you building? Billet Main caps are an option if your going to go nuts with it. 440 Main caps are just the ticket, but will need line bored and honed. As long as your in there... Use the 440 thrust cap as a paper weight, take the "Extra" cap from the 440 set and take the width down a thousandth or so. It becomes your slant thrust cap. That should remove any worries if your going for an over the top build. CJ |

Caps interchange rather well but you really should align hone to do it right. That being said when I put the engine together that I did drag week with in 2005 I somehow reversed the #2 and #3 main caps. After drag week we drove out to California then the next spring to North Carolina. The car always ran strong and when I finally tore it down and discovered the cap problem the bearings looked fine, there didn't seem to be any unusual wear on the thrust bearing even though I had only half of it installed. I put the caps back in the right place and it is still running good. I wouldn't recommend this but that's why we play with slants, they are very forgiving of mistakes that might destroy a lesser engine. |

well then read the ad,I do know from my foundry-casting experience that a significant amount of a parts strength is in the surface structure. For example shot peening compresses the surface ( i.e cast cranks) and that action increases durability. Anodizing has a similar impact on aluminum, I have seen where anodizing the top ring area on an aluminum piston has a measurable impact on tensile and wear resistance strength. again, I am not endorsing the product nor do I have any experience with this product, just saying that anodizing can make aluminum pretty tough. And that is because it makes the skin really hard. |

Aluminum main caps are used when cap walk from detonation has been/could be an issue. They are more forgiving to the bearings than a billet steel or iron cap.

Aluminum caps are somewhat beefier. But remember aluminum is a shock dampening material, and is useful for caps or rods when the applications need them. |
